Download the latest version of Default Tamer from GitHub Releases:

Download Default Tamer v0.0.5

DefaultTamer-v0.0.5.dmg (latest release)
Or browse all releases on the GitHub Releases page.
Default Tamer requires macOS 13.0 or later.

Install to Applications

Open the DMG

Double-click the downloaded DefaultTamer-v0.0.5.dmg file to mount the disk image.

Drag to Applications

Drag the Default Tamer app icon to your Applications folder.

Launch Default Tamer

Open your Applications folder and double-click Default Tamer to launch it.You’ll see a menu bar icon appear in the top-right of your screen.
On first launch, macOS may show a security warning because Default Tamer is not from the App Store. Click “Open” to proceed. If you don’t see an “Open” button, go to System Settings → Privacy & Security and click “Open Anyway”.

Set as Default Browser

After launching Default Tamer for the first time, you’ll see a first-run setup window:

Open System Settings

In the first-run window, click the “Open System Settings” button.This will take you directly to the Desktop & Dock settings panel.

Select Default Tamer

In System Settings:
  1. Navigate to Desktop & Dock
  2. Scroll down to Default web browser
  3. Select Default Tamer from the dropdown

Verify

Click any link in Slack, Mail, or another app. Default Tamer should now intercept the URL.Since you haven’t created any rules yet, the link will open in your configured fallback browser.
You can also set Default Tamer as your default browser manually:
  • Open System Settings
  • Go to Desktop & Dock
  • Under “Default web browser”, select Default Tamer

Configure Fallback Browser

The fallback browser is where links go when no rules match.

Open Preferences

Click the Default Tamer menu bar icon, then click the gear icon ⚙️ to open Preferences.

Set Fallback Browser

In the General tab, find the Fallback Browser dropdown.Select your preferred default browser (Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Arc, etc.).

Test It

Click any link. It should now open in your fallback browser.

Optional: Launch at Login

To have Default Tamer start automatically when you log in:

Open Preferences

Click the Default Tamer menu bar icon → ⚙️ Preferences

Enable Launch at Login

In the General tab, toggle on “Launch at Login”.Default Tamer will now start automatically every time you log in to macOS.

Automatic Updates

Default Tamer uses Sparkle for automatic updates. The app checks for updates in the background and will notify you when a new version is available. To manually check for updates:
  1. Click the Default Tamer menu bar icon
  2. Go to the About tab
  3. Click “Check for Updates”
Update checks happen automatically in the background. You can disable automatic checks in Preferences → General.
