Quick start

This guide walks you through launching TypeSteps for the first time, granting necessary permissions, and exploring your typing stats.

First launch

When you launch TypeSteps for the first time, you’ll see a two-step onboarding flow.
1

Launch the app

Open TypeSteps from your Applications folder or using Spotlight (Cmd + Space, then type “TypeSteps”).The app will appear in your menu bar with a keyboard icon.
2

Grant Accessibility permission

The onboarding screen explains why TypeSteps needs Accessibility permission:
  • Monitors keyboard input globally across all apps
  • All data stays on your device securely
  • You can revoke permission anytime in System Settings
Click Open System Settings to grant the permission.
TypeSteps cannot function without Accessibility permission. This is required to listen for keystrokes system-wide.
In System Settings:
  1. Navigate to Privacy & Security > Accessibility
  2. Find TypeSteps in the list (or click + to add it)
  3. Toggle the switch to enable it
TypeSteps will automatically detect when the permission is granted and advance to the next step.
3

Enable Open at Login (optional)

The second onboarding step asks if you want TypeSteps to start automatically when you log in.Benefits:
  • Starts automatically in the background
  • Lightweight—won’t affect Mac performance
  • You can change this anytime in Settings
Toggle the switch to enable, or click Skip for now to continue without it.
4

Click Get Started

Click Get Started to complete onboarding and see the TypeSteps dashboard!

Understanding the dashboard

The TypeSteps dashboard is divided into several key sections:

Main stats

At the top, you’ll see your primary typing count based on the selected view:
  • Day: Letters typed today with an hourly breakdown chart
  • Week: Total for the current week with daily bars
  • Month: Total for the current month with monthly trends
The activity trend chart uses:
  • Area chart for daily view showing typing rhythm throughout the day
  • Bar charts for weekly and monthly views
Click and drag on the chart to see specific data points and exact counts.

Daily goal progress

In Day view, you’ll see a circular progress indicator showing your progress toward your daily goal (default: 5,000 characters). Adjust your goal using the slider in the Insights panel on the right.

Activity heatmap

The heatmap shows your typing consistency throughout 2026. Each cell represents one day:
  • Darker colors indicate more typing activity
  • Light gray indicates days with no activity
  • Transparent cells are future dates
Hover over any cell to see the exact date and character count.

Top applications

The right sidebar shows which apps you type in most. TypeSteps tracks:
  • App name with icon
  • Total character count per app
  • Percentage of total activity
Applications are automatically categorized (Code, Communication, Creation, Browsing, Utility, Other).

Insights panel

The insights panel displays:
  • Best day: Your highest typing day ever
  • Streak: Consecutive days with typing activity
  • Peak hour: The hour you type most (in 24-hour format)
  • Avg / hour: Average characters per active hour
  • Daily goal: Adjustable target with a slider (1,000–20,000 characters)

Weekly highlights

See your most active and quietest days this week with quick summary cards.

The World Tour

Gamified milestones track your lifetime typing progress:
  • Keyboard Sprint (10,000 characters)
  • The Tower - Burj Khalifa (50,000)
  • City Explorer - Central Park (250,000)
  • Mountain King - Mt. Everest (1,000,000)
  • Channel Swimmer - English Channel (5,000,000)
  • Grand Tour - Across India (50,000,000)
Progress bars show how close you are to each milestone, and completed milestones show iteration counts.

Tips for effective tracking

Enable Open at Login

Ensure TypeSteps starts automatically so you never miss tracking a day

Set a realistic goal

Start with 5,000 characters and adjust based on your typical workday

Use the pause feature

Pause tracking during breaks or personal time for more accurate work insights

Check weekly highlights

Review your most and least active days to identify productivity patterns

Troubleshooting

TypeSteps isn’t counting keystrokes

  1. Check that Accessibility permission is enabled in System Settings > Privacy & Security > Accessibility
  2. Ensure tracking is not paused (check the menu bar icon)
  3. Try quitting and relaunching TypeSteps

The app won’t open

  1. Check macOS version (requires macOS 13+)
  2. Try removing and reinstalling via Homebrew
  3. Check Console.app for crash logs

Stats look incorrect

TypeSteps counts letters, numbers, punctuation, and whitespace—but not:
  • Modifier keys alone (Shift, Cmd, Ctrl, Option)
  • Function keys (F1–F12)
  • Keyboard shortcuts (e.g., Cmd + C)

Next steps

Now that you’re up and running:
  1. Start typing! TypeSteps is now tracking your activity across all apps
  2. Check back daily to see your progress and build a streak
  3. Adjust your goal based on your typical activity level
  4. Explore themes to personalize your dashboard
Happy typing!
