Purpose
The 1943–1944 view is designed to give excavation directors the scientific justification for investment decisions at the macro scale. By visualising the full density of recorded Allied bombing missions across the European theatre, A.D.I. analysts can answer three foundational questions for any prospection campaign:- Where were the largest concentrations of missions and impact tonnage?
- Which cities were most targeted, and how many recorded missions does each carry?
- Which aircraft types dominated operations, and what ordnance profiles do they imply?
Key Filters
The page carries a categorical filter onadi_master_1943_1944.Mission Date at the page level. In addition, the following interactive slicers are available to the analyst:
- Date range — Slice the 1943–1944 window to focus on a specific month or quarter and observe how the bombing campaign evolved over time.
- Aircraft Series — Filter by aircraft type to isolate, for example, only B-17 Flying Fortress missions and map their geographic footprint independently.

Among all cities with recorded missions in the 1943–1944 dataset, Brest (527 missions) and ST LO (404 missions) lead the mission count by a substantial margin. These figures provide direct scientific justification for prioritising both locations within the A.D.I. prospection roadmap: the sheer density of documented bombing events makes them statistically likely sites for buried structural remains — bunkers, command posts, reinforced shelters, and impact craters.A significant share of records carry UNKNOWN as the target city value (322 missions). Rather than representing absences, these records may conceal undiscovered defensive positions, camouflaged installations, or field emplacements that were never formally catalogued in Allied target databases. For predictive archaeology, UNKNOWN-city missions are high-value prospection leads precisely because they fall outside known target lists.

The target-type field reveals the strategic logic of the campaign and, by extension, the types of material remains that A.D.I. can expect to find underground:
- AIRDROME (2,876 recorded hits in the full dataset) — Luftwaffe airfields are among the richest sites for heritage digitisation. Hardened infrastructure — aircraft bunkers (Splitterschutzzellen), reinforced control towers, underground fuel stores, and blast-protected shelters — survives well below ploughline and is a core line of business for A.D.I.’s 3D documentation services.
- UNIDENTIFIED TARGET (1,915 + 101 = 2,016 hits, split across two spelling variants caused by data-entry inconsistencies) — The aggregate size of this category rivals AIRDROME. Unidentified targets are the most promising class for predictive archaeology: they likely represent hidden bunkers, camouflaged artillery positions, V-weapon launch sites, and improvised defensive emplacements that never appeared in formal Allied target intelligence.
- CITY AREA (627 hits) — Urban centres damaged or destroyed in area bombing retain buried medieval and early-modern fabric beneath WWII destruction layers. This category justifies digital heritage reconstruction projects that combine bombing-damage mapping with historic urban cartography.

The tonnage distribution in the 1943–1944 dataset shows significant statistical skew. Key figures for mission planning:
- Maximum recorded: 999.0 tons — This value is almost certainly a legacy placeholder code used in early THOR digitisation to flag records where actual tonnage was unavailable. It should not be interpreted as a genuine mission weight.
- Mean: 46.7 tons per mission — The average destructive load per recorded event.
- Median: 33 tons — The typical mission, substantially lower than the mean, confirms that the distribution is right-skewed by a small number of catastrophic or mislabelled high-tonnage entries.

1_cleanbombww2.csv was intentionally excluded from this view because it is heavily biased toward Italy and Sicily (MTO operations) and contains only one recorded French mission — insufficient to contribute meaningful signal to a Normandy-focused prospection analysis.
