The SquirrelDisk binary is not code-signed. Windows Defender will display a security warning when you first run the installer. This is normal for unsigned applications.

Download

Download the latest Windows installer (.exe) from the GitHub releases page.

Installation Steps

1

Run the Installer

Double-click the downloaded .exe file to start the installation process.
2

Bypass Windows Defender SmartScreen

When Windows Defender SmartScreen blocks the installer, you’ll see a warning dialog:
  1. Click “More Information” in the SmartScreen dialog
  2. Click “Run Anyway” to proceed with the installation
This warning appears because the application is not code-signed with a Microsoft-trusted certificate. Code signing certificates are expensive for open-source projects. Learn more about why binaries aren’t signed.
3

Complete Installation

Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the installation. SquirrelDisk will be installed to your system and added to your Start Menu.
4

Launch SquirrelDisk

After installation, you can launch SquirrelDisk from the Start Menu or desktop shortcut.

System Requirements

  • Windows 7 or later
  • 64-bit processor
  • Minimum 2GB RAM recommended

Troubleshooting

Windows Defender Keeps Blocking the App

If Windows Defender continues to block the application after installation:
  1. Open Windows Security from the Start Menu
  2. Go to Virus & threat protection > Protection history
  3. Find the SquirrelDisk entry and select Allow on device
Alternatively, add an exclusion:
  1. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection
  2. Click Manage settings under “Virus & threat protection settings”
  3. Scroll to Exclusions and click Add or remove exclusions
  4. Add the SquirrelDisk installation folder

Installation Fails or Hangs

  • Make sure you have administrator privileges
  • Close any antivirus software temporarily during installation
  • Try running the installer as administrator (right-click > “Run as administrator”)

App Won’t Start After Installation

  • Verify that your system meets the minimum requirements
  • Check Windows Event Viewer for error messages
  • Try reinstalling the application
  • Report the issue on the GitHub issue page

Updates

SquirrelDisk includes an auto-updater that checks for new versions when you launch the app. You’ll be notified when updates are available.
When an update is available, you’ll see a notification dialog. Click to download and install the latest version.
