Shimmering Focus is a minimalistic, opinionated Obsidian theme built specifically for the keyboard-centric user. Rather than simply offering a new coat of paint, it rethinks the entire Obsidian interface — hiding what you don’t need, condensing what remains, and giving you over a hundred settings to tune every detail to your workflow. With more than 333,000 downloads and a win at Obsidian October 2022, it has become one of the most trusted themes in the Obsidian community, currently ranking as the 11th most downloaded theme in the store.

Design Philosophy

Shimmering Focus is built on three interconnected design pillars that set it apart from most other Obsidian themes.

Radical Minimalism

Most “minimal” themes only strip down colors. Shimmering Focus goes further: it hides or defers entire UI elements — tab bars, sidebar buttons, close buttons, suggester hints — that keyboard users simply don’t need. Everything can be re-enabled via Style Settings.

Condensed Information

Unnecessary padding and whitespace are removed throughout the interface. This is especially beneficial on smaller screens or when working at higher zoom levels, letting you see more of your notes at once without sacrificing readability.

High Customizability

More than a hundred settings are available through the Style Settings plugin, covering fonts, color schemes, vim mode behavior, writing mode options, and per-plugin tweaks. The theme adapts to you — not the other way around.

Key Highlights

Shimmering Focus was the 🏆 Winner of Obsidian October 2022 and is currently the 11th most downloaded theme in the Obsidian community theme store, with over 333,000 downloads.

Feature Categories

Shimmering Focus organizes its features into several major areas, each designed to reduce friction for power users.

Smart UI Hiding

The theme intelligently hides UI elements based on context. The tab bar only appears when more than one tab is open. Sidebar tab buttons appear on hover rather than consuming permanent space. Close buttons, new-tab buttons, and suggester keyboard hints are hidden by default — but every one of these behaviors can be toggled back on via Style Settings.

Vim Mode

Obsidian’s vim mode gets first-class treatment with Shimmering Focus. You get explicit cursor styling per mode, a configurable blink rate, optional relative line numbers, cursorline highlighting in normal mode, and the ability to suppress mouse hover tooltips that interrupt keyboard-driven flows.

Writer Mode

For long-form writing, the theme provides dedicated styling for notes using the writing CSS class or the Longform plugin. This includes Pandoc citation and footnote emphasis, a serif font optimized for prose, adjustable line height and letter spacing, paragraph indentation, and word-count visibility controls.

Color Schemes

Shimmering Focus ships with the default Gamma color scheme alongside four community-contributed alternatives — macOS native, Coffee, Everforest, and Gruvbox — all selectable from Style Settings without any CSS knowledge. You can also create your own color scheme using a short CSS snippet.
