Social networks are among the richest sources of publicly available intelligence. During an OSINT investigation, they enable profile discovery — finding accounts tied to a real name, username, or email address — as well as relationship mapping between individuals, organizations, and events. Timeline analysis can establish patterns of behavior, travel, and associations over time. Platforms with open APIs or lax privacy defaults make it possible to surface posts, check-ins, tagged photos, and follower graphs that subjects may not realize are public. In social engineering contexts, understanding which platforms a target uses — and how actively — can inform pretext development and rapport-building strategies.
Automated scraping of social network profiles may violate platforms’ Terms of Service and, in some jurisdictions, applicable computer fraud or data protection laws. Manual investigation is recommended for OSINT work. Always operate within the legal and ethical boundaries of your engagement or jurisdiction.

WhatsApp

Encrypted messaging platform — profile photos and status messages visible to contacts.

Quora

Q&A platform — answers can reveal expertise, opinion, and personal background information.

TikTok

Short-form video platform — profiles, hashtags, and duets reveal interests and associations.

Vimeo

Professional video hosting platform used by creators, businesses, and individuals.

Long-form publishing platform — author profiles and article history can surface opinions and affiliations.

WeChat

Dominant messaging and social platform in China — relevant for investigations involving Chinese nationals.

VK

Meta’s text-based social platform linked to Instagram accounts — growing user base post-launch.
Social network searches become significantly more powerful when combined with username enumeration tools. Tools like Whatsmyname, Namecheckr, and Username Search (covered in the People section) let you check whether a given username is registered across dozens of platforms simultaneously — helping you discover accounts a subject may not have disclosed.
