OpenComic supports a wide range of file formats for reading comics, manga, and digital books. This comprehensive format support ensures compatibility with virtually any comic file you might encounter.

Image formats

OpenComic natively supports all major image formats:
  • JPG/JPEG - Standard JPEG images
  • JP2 - JPEG 2000 format
  • JXR - JPEG XR format
  • JXL - JPEG XL format (next-generation)
  • PNG - Portable Network Graphics
  • APNG - Animated PNG
  • AVIF - AV1 Image File Format
  • HEIC - High Efficiency Image Container
  • WEBP - Modern web image format
  • GIF - Graphics Interchange Format
  • SVG - Scalable Vector Graphics
  • BMP - Bitmap images
  • ICO - Icon format
These formats cover everything from traditional comic scans to modern high-efficiency formats, giving you flexibility in how your content is stored and displayed.

OpenComic can read comics from compressed archives without requiring manual extraction:

OpenComic automatically caches extracted files for faster subsequent access. The cache is managed automatically to prevent excessive disk usage.

EPUB support is currently in alpha stage. While functional for most files, you may encounter compatibility issues with some EPUB files.

Background music

In addition to visual content, OpenComic can play background music from the comic folder:
  • MP3 - MPEG Audio Layer 3
  • M4A - MPEG-4 Audio
  • MP4 - MPEG-4 container
  • WEBM - WebM audio
  • WEBA - WebM Audio
  • OGG - Ogg Vorbis
  • OPUS - Opus audio codec
  • WAV - Waveform Audio
  • FLAC - Free Lossless Audio Codec
Place audio files in the same folder as your comic pages, and OpenComic will automatically detect and offer to play them as background music while reading.

Format detection

OpenComic automatically detects file formats based on:
  1. File extension
  2. File header analysis (magic numbers)
  3. Content inspection when needed
This intelligent detection ensures that files are handled correctly even if they have incorrect or missing extensions.

Nested archives

OpenComic supports reading comics inside nested compressed files. For example, you can read:
  • A CBZ file inside a ZIP archive
  • A folder of images inside a RAR file within a 7Z archive
The application automatically extracts nested archives as needed, making your reading experience seamless.
