Global Edit Mode allows you to edit metadata for multiple files at once. When you select multiple files in the file list, TagQt automatically enters this mode.

Entering Global Edit Mode

There are several ways to enter Global Edit Mode:

Automatic Entry

  • Select multiple files in the file list
  • The sidebar will automatically switch to Global Edit Mode

Keyboard Shortcut

  • Press Ctrl+G to select all visible files and enter Global Edit Mode
  • Only files that match the current filter will be selected
  • Navigate to Edit → Global Edit (All Visible)
  • This selects all visible files in the current view

How It Works

Field Behavior

When in Global Edit Mode, the sidebar adapts to show only fields suitable for batch editing: Hidden Fields (unique per track):
  • Title
  • Track Number
  • Disc Number
  • BPM
  • Key
  • ISRC
  • Lyrics
Available Fields (common metadata):
  • Artist
  • Album
  • Album Artist
  • Year
  • Genre
  • Label (Publisher)
  • Comment

Placeholders

All editable fields show the placeholder text <Keep Original>. This means:
  • Empty fields → Original values are preserved
  • Filled fields → All selected files are updated with the new value

Cover Art

The cover art area displays “Get Cover” text. You can:
  • Click Get Cover to fetch cover art for all selected files
  • The “Load Cover” button is hidden (not suitable for batch operations)

Visual Indicators

  • The sidebar background may change to indicate Global Edit Mode is active
  • The Save button text changes to “Save All Changes”
  • A Cancel button appears next to Save
  • File specs show “Multiple Files Selected”

Saving Changes

When you click Save All Changes:
  1. Only non-empty fields are applied
  2. Each selected file is updated individually
  3. Original values are preserved for empty fields
  4. A progress dialog shows the batch operation status

Exiting Global Edit Mode

You can exit Global Edit Mode by:

Keyboard Shortcut

  • Press Escape to cancel and return to single-file editing

Cancel Button

  • Click the Cancel button in the sidebar
  • This restores the sidebar to single-file mode

Select Single File

  • Click on a single file in the file list
  • The sidebar automatically exits Global Edit Mode
After exiting, the first file from your previous selection will be loaded in single-edit mode.

Batch Operations

Global Edit Mode also affects batch operations from the menu and command palette: When Global Edit is Active:
  • “Get Lyrics (All)” → Processes only selected files
  • “Get Covers (All)” → Processes only selected files
  • “Rename Files” → Renames only selected files
  • “Auto-Tag (All)” → Tags only selected files
When NOT in Global Edit:
  • Batch operations process all visible files (respecting the current filter)

Workflow Example

1. Load a folder with mixed albums
2. Filter files by typing "2023" in the filter box
3. Press Ctrl+G to select all 2023 releases
4. Enter Global Edit Mode automatically
5. Set "Year" to "2023"
6. Set "Label" to "Independent Records"
7. Leave other fields empty
8. Click "Save All Changes"
9. Progress bar shows batch save operation
10. Press Escape to return to normal mode
