System Requirements
| Requirement | Minimum |
|---|---|
| OS | Windows 10 build 19041 (May 2020 Update) or Windows 11 |
| Architecture | x64 (AMD64) |
| Runtime | WebView2 Runtime (installed automatically by the setup wizard if missing) |
| Disk space | ~100 MB |
The installer uses per-user privilege level by default, which means no UAC administrator prompt is required. BetterWinTab installs entirely under your own user profile. If you need a system-wide install for all users on a shared machine, the installer will offer an elevation option at setup time.
Choosing an Install Method
- Installer (recommended)
- Portable zip
The Inno Setup installer is the recommended path for most users. It handles the WebView2 Runtime dependency, creates Start Menu shortcuts, and optionally registers BetterWinTab to launch at Windows startup.
Download the installer
Go to the BetterWinTab Releases page and download the latest
BetterWinTab-Setup-x.x.x-x64.exe file.Run the setup wizard
Double-click the downloaded
.exe. Because the installer runs at the per-user privilege level, no UAC elevation prompt will appear in the typical case.Accept the WebView2 Runtime install (if prompted)
If WebView2 is not already present on your machine, the installer runs the bundled Microsoft Edge WebView2 Evergreen Bootstrapper silently before completing setup. This step is fully automatic — you will see a brief status message and it will proceed on its own.
Choose startup behavior
The wizard includes a “Launch BetterWinTab on Windows startup” option that is checked by default. Leave it checked to have BetterWinTab start silently with Windows, or uncheck it if you prefer to launch it manually. You can change this at any time later in Settings → General.
First Launch
Regardless of which install method you used, the first launch experience is the same:- A system tray icon appears in the Windows notification area (bottom-right of the taskbar). Right-click it to access Settings, quit, or restart the app.
- The first-run onboarding walkthrough opens automatically (
HasCompletedOnboardingisfalseby default). It covers the activation hotkey, folder setup, and basic navigation. You can skip it and return at any time. - Press
Ctrl + Tabto open the overlay for the first time.
Enabling Launch at Startup
You can configure BetterWinTab to start automatically with Windows in two ways:- During installer setup — the “Launch BetterWinTab on Windows startup” task is checked by default in the Inno Setup wizard.
- After installation — open the overlay, press the settings icon (or right-click the tray icon and choose Settings), navigate to General, and toggle Run at startup.
Uninstalling BetterWinTab
- Installer build
- Portable build
Open Windows Settings → Apps → Installed apps (or Apps & features on Windows 10), search for BetterWinTab, and click Uninstall. The uninstaller removes all program files, Start Menu shortcuts, and the startup registry entry. User settings stored under
%APPDATA%\BetterWinTab are also removed so that a future fresh install starts from scratch.
