An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is the software that 75% of mid-to-large companies in Latin America use to pre-screen resumes. When you submit your CV, the ATS scans it before any human ever sees it — meaning a poorly formatted or keyword-light document can be eliminated automatically, regardless of your actual qualifications.Documentation Index

How ATS systems process your CV
Every ATS performs four core operations the moment your resume is received. Understanding each one gives you a concrete advantage when crafting your document.Keyword filtering
The ATS scans for exact keywords from the job posting. If the required terms are missing or phrased differently, your CV is ranked lower or filtered out entirely — even if your experience is a perfect match.
Structured parsing
The system converts your PDF into structured data fields: name, work history, education, skills. Unusual formats — tables, multiple columns, decorative fonts — cause the parser to lose or misread critical information.
Automatic ranking
Candidates are scored by their compatibility with the job description. A properly optimized CV can place you in the top 10% of applicants before a single recruiter opens the file.
Knockout questions
Many ATS platforms include automatic elimination triggers. If your CV doesn’t meet a hard requirement — a specific degree, certification, or years of experience — it is disqualified before human review.
How to beat the ATS with your CV
Passing the ATS filter is a skill in itself. The following steps are drawn directly from best practices validated against the most common ATS platforms used in El Salvador and Central America.Mirror the job posting's exact vocabulary
If the listing says “React Native,” write “React Native” — not just “React” or “mobile development.” ATS engines match strings, not concepts. Paraphrase costs you ranking points.
Eliminate tables, columns, graphics, and complex headers
Parsers read left-to-right, top-to-bottom as plain text. Multi-column layouts, decorative headers, and embedded graphics break the parsing flow and cause entire sections to be dropped.
Save as a standard, text-based PDF
Export your CV as a native PDF — not a scanned image, not a PDF with image layers. Scanned documents produce zero readable text for the parser; the ATS will see a blank page.
Include clearly labelled standard sections
Use recognizable section headings: Experiencia, Educación, Habilidades. These are the field anchors the parser looks for. Custom section names like “My Journey” or “What I Bring” confuse automated systems.
Remove photos and all decorative elements
Profile photos, icons, progress bars for skill levels, and decorative dividers serve no purpose in the ATS layer and actively interfere with parsing. Save visual design for a separate printed portfolio or LinkedIn profile.
Did you know?
In El Salvador, companies like Grupo Centra, Banco Agrícola, and free-trade zone manufacturers use systems such as Evaluar, Workday, or Greenhouse. A CV that contains tables, decorative fonts, or image-based content can be rejected automatically — before a recruiter ever lays eyes on it.
