Installing Alpha Piscium takes only a few minutes. The shaderpack is distributed as a single ZIP file and is loaded through Iris, a dedicated shader loader for Minecraft. You do not need to unzip the file — Iris reads shader ZIPs directly. Follow the steps below to go from a fresh Minecraft installation to a fully running Alpha Piscium setup.
Alpha Piscium requires Iris version 1.7 or higher. Earlier versions of Iris will fail to load the shaderpack. Make sure you download the correct Iris version for your Minecraft release before proceeding.

Installation Steps

1

Download Alpha Piscium

Download the latest Alpha Piscium ZIP file from one of the official distribution channels:
  • Modrinth — the primary release channel, always up to date
  • GitHub Releases — alternative source for the same official builds
Do not unzip the downloaded file. Iris loads shaderpacks directly from their ZIP archives.
2

Install Iris 1.7 or Higher

Download and install Iris for your version of Minecraft. The Iris installer will set up a dedicated Iris profile in your Minecraft launcher automatically, along with the required version of Sodium.Make sure to select Iris version 1.7 or higher on the download page. Alpha Piscium will not load on earlier Iris versions.
3

Open the Minecraft Launcher and Select the Iris Profile

Open your Minecraft launcher. In the profile selector (bottom-left of the launcher), choose the Iris profile that was created during installation. Make sure it targets the same Minecraft version you intend to play.
4

Launch Minecraft

Click Play to launch Minecraft with the Iris profile. Wait for the game to fully load to the main menu before continuing.
5

Open the Shader Pack Folder

From the Minecraft main menu, navigate to:Options → Video Settings → Shader PacksThen click Open Shader Pack Folder. This opens the .minecraft/shaderpacks directory in your system file browser.
6

Move the ZIP File into the Shaderpacks Folder

Move or copy the Alpha Piscium ZIP file you downloaded in Step 1 into the .minecraft/shaderpacks folder that just opened. You do not need to extract it.
7

Select Alpha Piscium in the Shaders List

Return to Minecraft. In the Shader Packs screen, you should now see the Alpha Piscium ZIP listed. Click on it to select it. When a shaderpack is selected in Iris, its filename turns yellow in the list — this confirms the selection is active.
8

Apply and Load

Click Done or Apply. Iris will compile and load the shaderpack. This may take up to a minute on the first load while shaders are compiled. Once complete, Alpha Piscium will be active in your world.

After Installation

For full, physically accurate lighting — especially at night — Alpha Piscium works best alongside a PBR resource pack that provides normal maps and specular data. Without one, indirect lighting at night may appear very dark. For a vanilla-style look, SPBR is a good starting point; for higher detail, consider Patrix.
If the shaderpack fails to load or you encounter errors, press Ctrl+D on the Iris shaderpack selection screen, then try reloading the shaderpack. This triggers a cache clear and often resolves transient compilation failures. If the error persists, the error message will reference relevant files in .minecraft/patched_shaders that can help diagnose the issue.
