The GHIBLI theme is unlike anything else in the standard VS Code theme library. Inspired by the warm, hand-painted backgrounds of Studio Ghibli films — parchment, aged wood, sun-baked earth, and forest shadow — it replaces clinical grays and stark whites with a palette of creams, tans, and soft browns. The result is a light workspace that feels organic rather than digital, calm rather than clinical, and distinctly human in a way most code editors never attempt.Documentation Index

Key Characteristics
- Warm earthy palette — backgrounds span from parchment cream (
#f2e6d3) to warm sand (#e8d5c4), with borders and separators in natural tan (#d4c4a8). No cold grays, no blue-tinted whites. - Studio Ghibli aesthetic — color choices deliberately evoke the analog warmth of traditional animation cels rather than the flat neutrality of a default editor theme.
- Unique and calming — the amber-orange activity bar icon (
#a76913) and dusty-brown text (#6b5d4f) create a visual rhythm that feels unhurried, supporting long focused writing and thinking sessions as much as quick coding sprints. - Gentle contrast — foreground values (
#4a3f35,#443c33) provide solid readability against the cream backgrounds without the eye-snapping harshness of pure black on pure white.
GHIBLI is a light theme (VS Code base type:
vs). For the best icon experience, pair it with Style B icons (lynx-icons-light). Style B’s lighter icon strokes and tones harmonise with the warm cream surfaces without introducing the visual weight of Style A’s darker icon set. Semantic highlighting is enabled ("semanticHighlighting": true).
