Signal is a simple, powerful, and secure messenger. Every conversation is protected by end-to-end encryption by default — there are no settings to configure, no subscriptions to buy, and no exceptions. Signal is free to use and open source under the GNU AGPLv3 license. Signal uses your phone’s data connection (Wi-Fi, 3G, 4G, or 5G) to send messages and make calls. Your phone number is your identifier — no separate username or account is required.

What Signal does

Signal covers the full range of everyday communication:
  • Messaging — Text, photos, videos, voice notes, and files, all encrypted end-to-end
  • Voice and video calls — HD one-on-one and group calls over an encrypted channel
  • Group chats — Encrypted group messaging with up to 1000 members
  • Stories — Share moments that disappear after 24 hours
  • Disappearing messages — Set messages to delete automatically after a timer you control
  • Note to Self — Use your own Signal conversation as a private notepad
  • Backups — Encrypted message backups tied to your Signal PIN via Secure Value Recovery (SVR)

Privacy by design

Signal’s privacy protections are always on. There is no opt-in required:
  • End-to-end encryption — Only you and your recipient can read your messages. Signal’s servers never have access to the plaintext content of your conversations.
  • Sealed sender — Signal minimizes metadata by obscuring who is messaging whom, not just what is being said.
  • Screen security — Prevent message previews from appearing in your app switcher.
  • Secure Value Recovery (SVR) — Your Signal PIN protects your account data and message history in Signal’s secure enclave infrastructure (svr2.signal.org), not on a plain server.
  • Open source — The code is publicly auditable. Signal Android is licensed under the GNU AGPLv3.
