Installation methods

There are several ways to install Essential for Minecraft Java Edition, depending on your preference and setup.
1

Download the installer

Visit essential.gg/download and download the Essential Installer for your operating system.
2

Run the installer

Execute the installer and follow the on-screen instructions. The installer will automatically detect your Minecraft installation and mod loader.
3

Launch Minecraft

Start your Minecraft launcher and select the Essential profile. The mod will be automatically loaded.
The installer creates a “container” mod that downloads the latest version of Essential on first launch. This ensures you always have access to the newest features and fixes.

Method 2: Manual installation

1

Choose your platform

Determine which mod loader you’re using:
  • Forge (Minecraft 1.8.9, 1.12.2, 1.16.2+)
  • Fabric (Minecraft 1.16.2+)
  • NeoForge (Minecraft 1.20.4+)
2

Download the mod file

Download the appropriate Essential jar file:Option A: Container mod (from essential.gg/download)
  • Small file size (< 1 MB)
  • Downloads the latest Essential version on first launch
  • Automatically updates to new versions
Option B: Pinned mod (from Modrinth/CurseForge)
  • Larger file size (includes full Essential code)
  • Contains a specific Essential version
  • Suitable for modpacks and stable environments
3

Install the mod

Place the downloaded jar file in your .minecraft/mods folder:
%APPDATA%\.minecraft\mods
4

Launch Minecraft

Start Minecraft with your mod loader. Essential will load automatically. If you installed the container mod, Essential will download the full mod on first launch (this may take a moment).

Verifying installation

1

Launch Minecraft

Start your Minecraft client with the mod loader you installed Essential for.
2

Check the main menu

Look for Essential branding or UI elements on the main menu.
3

Check the mods list

  • Forge/NeoForge: Click “Mods” from the main menu
  • Fabric: Install Mod Menu and check the mods list
You should see “Essential” listed with version 1.3.10.6 (or newer).
4

Access Essential settings

Press the Essential keybind (check your controls) or look for Essential menu options to confirm the mod is fully loaded.

Troubleshooting

  • Ensure the jar file is in the correct .minecraft/mods folder
  • Verify you’re launching with the correct mod loader (Forge/Fabric/NeoForge)
  • Check that your Minecraft version is supported
  • Review the game log for any error messages
The container mod downloads Essential on first launch. This requires an internet connection and may take a few minutes depending on your connection speed. If downloads fail, check your firewall settings or try the pinned mod from Modrinth/CurseForge instead.
Essential is designed to be compatible with most mods. However, if you experience issues:
  • Try launching with only Essential installed
  • Check for known incompatibilities in the Discord community
  • Report issues at essential.gg/support
Ensure you’ve downloaded the Essential version that matches your Minecraft version and mod loader. The version format is:Essential (<Mod-Loader>_<MC-Version>).jarFor example: Essential (Fabric_1.20.4).jar
Essential is a client-side only mod. It does not need to be installed on servers and will not work if placed in a server’s mods folder.
