Overview

Once you’ve uploaded a document, EduMate can generate multiple-choice questions (MCQs) based on your content. You have full control over the number and cognitive level of questions using Bloom’s Taxonomy.

Prerequisites

Before generating an assessment, ensure you have:
  • Uploaded a PDF document
  • Waited for document processing to complete
  • Seen the “Document ready for AI generation” confirmation

Understanding Bloom’s Taxonomy

EduMate uses Bloom’s Taxonomy to create questions at different cognitive levels:

Remember

Recall facts, basic concepts, or information from memory.Example: “What is the definition of…?”

Understand

Explain ideas or concepts in your own words.Example: “Explain why…”

Apply

Use learned knowledge in new or real-world situations.Example: “How would you use…?”

Analyze

Draw connections and break down information into parts.Example: “What is the relationship between…?”

Evaluate

Justify a decision or course of action using evidence.Example: “Which approach is better and why?”

Create

Produce new or original work by combining ideas.Example: “Design a solution that…”

Configuring Your Assessment

Step 1: Access the Dashboard

From the main dashboard, locate the “Create New Assessment” card. This is where you’ll configure all assessment parameters.

Step 2: Set Bloom’s Taxonomy Distribution

Under “Step 2: Bloom’s Taxonomy Factors”, you’ll see six levels with adjustable counters:
1

Review Default Distribution

The system starts with a default distribution:
  • Remember: 5 questions
  • Understand: 3 questions
  • Apply: 4 questions
  • Analyze: 3 questions
  • Evaluate: 2 questions
  • Create: 3 questions
Total: 20 questions
2

Adjust Question Counts

For each level, use the minus (−) and plus (+) buttons to decrease or increase the number of questions.
The total question count updates automatically as you adjust individual levels.
3

Strategic Planning

Consider your assessment goals:
  • Lower-order thinking (Remember, Understand): Good for foundational knowledge checks
  • Mid-order thinking (Apply, Analyze): Tests practical application and critical thinking
  • Higher-order thinking (Evaluate, Create): Challenges students with complex problem-solving
You can set any level to 0 if you don’t want questions at that cognitive level.

Step 3: Enter Chapter Name

Under “Step 3: Chapter / Module Name”:
1

Provide Context

Enter a descriptive name for the assessment topic, such as:
  • “Asynchronous Node.js”
  • “Chapter 5: Photosynthesis”
  • “Introduction to Machine Learning”
Specific chapter names help the AI generate more contextually relevant questions.

Generating Your Assessment

Once configured:
1

Verify Settings

Ensure:
  • Your document is uploaded and processed
  • At least 1 question is configured (total > 0)
  • A chapter name is entered
2

Click Generate

Click the large “Generate AI Assessment” button at the bottom of the form.
The button is disabled until all requirements are met. If grayed out, check the button text for guidance.
3

Wait for Generation

The system will:
  • Switch to a loading screen with a spinning animation
  • Display status message: “Crafting your assessment with AI…”
  • Poll the backend every 2 seconds for completion
Typical Generation Time:
  • 10 questions: 30-60 seconds
  • 20 questions: 60-120 seconds
  • 30+ questions: 2-3 minutes
Do not close the browser tab or navigate away during generation. The process will be interrupted.
4

View Results

Once complete, you’ll automatically see your generated assessment with:
  • All questions numbered and formatted
  • Multiple-choice options (typically A-D)
  • Bloom’s level badge on each question
  • Toggle between Question Paper and Answer Key views

Understanding the Results Screen

Question Paper View

Shows questions without answers—ideal for distributing to students:
  • Question text
  • Answer options (A, B, C, D)
  • Bloom’s taxonomy level badge
  • Clean, professional formatting

Answer Key View

Shows the complete solution set:
  • All questions
  • Correct answers highlighted in green with a checkmark
  • Correct answer letter displayed in the header
  • Expandable explanations for each question
Click “Show Explanation” under any question in Answer Key mode to see the AI’s reasoning for the correct answer.

Regenerating Questions

Not satisfied with the results? You can generate a fresh set:
1

Click Regenerate

Click the “Regenerate Questions” button at the top of the results page.
2

New Generation Begins

The system uses the same document and settings to create entirely new questions with different content.
Regeneration uses the same chapter name and Bloom’s distribution you configured. Both the original and regenerated assessments are saved to your history.

Best Practices

Balance Cognitive Levels

Mix lower-order and higher-order questions to assess comprehensive understanding.

Start Small

Generate 10-15 questions first to evaluate quality before creating larger assessments.

Specific Chapter Names

Use precise, descriptive names to help the AI focus on relevant content.

Review Before Use

Always review generated questions for accuracy and relevance before distributing to students.

Troubleshooting

Check:
  • Is the document fully processed? (Look for green checkmark)
  • Is the total question count greater than 0?
  • Did you enter a chapter name?
Typical causes:
  • Large question counts (30+) take longer
  • High server load during peak hours
  • Complex document content
Wait at least 5 minutes before assuming failure. The system will show an error if generation fails.
Try:
  • Reduce the number of questions
  • Simplify the chapter name
  • Re-upload the document
  • Contact support if the issue persists

What Happens Behind the Scenes

When you generate an assessment:
  1. Job Creation: Your request is queued on the backend
  2. AI Processing: The AI retrieves relevant chunks from your document
  3. Question Generation: MCQs are created based on content and Bloom’s requirements
  4. Quality Check: Questions are formatted with options, correct answers, and explanations
  5. Database Storage: The assessment is automatically saved to your history
  6. Display: Results are presented in the interactive viewer
All generated assessments are automatically saved to your history for future access, even if you navigate away from the results page.
