WannaCut is designed around a keyboard-first editing workflow. Every essential action — from splitting clips to jumping between cut points — has a dedicated shortcut so your hands never have to leave the keyboard during a creative flow. The shortcuts below are always active in the editor window and are organized by functional category for quick reference.
Playback
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Space | Play / Pause | Works anywhere on the timeline. Also toggles playback in the source monitor when your mouse cursor is positioned over it. |
I | Set In Point | Source monitor only. Marks the start of the range you want to insert from an asset. |
O | Set Out Point | Source monitor only. Marks the end of the range you want to insert from an asset. |
Timeline Navigation
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Ctrl+. | Jump to next cut | Seeks the playhead forward to the nearest clip edge to the right of the current position. |
Ctrl+, | Jump to previous cut | Seeks the playhead backward to the nearest clip edge to the left of the current position. |
Alt+. | Advance 0.01 seconds | Moves the playhead forward by exactly 10 milliseconds. Use for precise, frame-by-frame forward scrubbing. |
Alt+, | Back 0.01 seconds | Moves the playhead backward by exactly 10 milliseconds. Use for precise, frame-by-frame backward scrubbing. |
Editing
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Alt+S | Split clip at playhead | Splits the selected clip at the playhead. If no clip is selected and exactly one clip exists under the playhead, that clip is split. WannaCut warns you if multiple overlapping clips are found. |
Ctrl+Q | Split & select left | Cuts all clips across all tracks at the playhead position and selects everything to the left of the cut. Useful for bulk-deleting a head section. |
Ctrl+W | Split & select right | Cuts all clips across all tracks at the playhead position and selects everything to the right of the cut. Useful for bulk-deleting a tail section. |
Delete / Backspace | Delete selected | Removes all currently selected clips from the timeline. Also deletes selected assets from the asset panel along with their timeline instances. |
Ctrl+C | Copy selected clips | Copies the current clip selection to WannaCut’s internal clipboard. |
Ctrl+V | Paste at playhead | Pastes the copied clips starting at the current playhead position on their original tracks. |
Ctrl+T | Toggle magnetic snap | Turns clip snapping on or off. When enabled, clips snap to the edges of adjacent clips as you drag them, making precise edits faster. A notification confirms the new state. |
Zoom
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Ctrl++ | Zoom in timeline | Increases pixels-per-second by 10, expanding the timeline horizontally so clips appear wider. |
Ctrl+- | Zoom out timeline | Decreases pixels-per-second by 10, compressing the timeline so more of your edit is visible at once. |
Alt+Scroll | Zoom in / out | Scrolling up zooms in (+20 px/s), scrolling down zooms out (−20 px/s). Only triggers when the Alt key is held. |
History
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Ctrl+Z | Undo | Steps backward through the edit history. WannaCut maintains up to 100 undo steps per session. |
Ctrl+Y | Redo | Steps forward through the redo stack after an undo. |
Ctrl+Shift+Z | Redo (alternative) | Identical to Ctrl+Y. Provided for users familiar with the standard three-key redo binding. |
Export
| Shortcut | Action | Notes |
|---|
Ctrl+Enter | Start export | Opens the system save-file dialog to choose an output path and begins the video export pipeline. Equivalent to clicking Export in the toolbar. |
Alt+S is the fastest way to make a cut without touching the mouse. Simply play your timeline, pause on the exact frame where you want to cut, and press Alt+S. WannaCut will split the clip under the playhead instantly — no need to click the Scissors button in the toolbar or switch tools.
Keyboard shortcuts are silently ignored when a text input field, textarea, or contenteditable element has focus. This prevents accidental edits — for example, pressing Delete while renaming an asset in the panel will delete the character in the input, not the asset itself. Click back on the canvas or timeline to restore full shortcut handling.
