Custom domain setup

Custom domains allow you to use your own domain for Digital Product Passport URLs, which is required for GS1-compliant QR codes.
Custom domains are only available to brand owners. Team members won’t see this option.

Why use a custom domain?

Brand consistency
  • Passport URLs use your domain (e.g., products.yourbrand.com/item-123)
  • Builds trust with customers who see your familiar domain
GS1 compliance
  • Required for GS1 Digital Link QR codes
  • Enables standardized product identification
Professional appearance
  • Your brand owns the entire customer experience
  • No third-party branding in URLs

Setting up a custom domain

1

Open the custom domain configuration

  1. In the Custom Domain section, click Configure
  2. The custom domain modal will open
If you already have a domain configured, you’ll see its current status (Verified, Pending, or Verification Needed).
2

Enter your domain

  1. Enter the subdomain you want to use (e.g., products.yourbrand.com)
  2. Click Add Domain
Use a subdomain (like products.yourbrand.com), not your root domain (yourbrand.com). This prevents conflicts with your main website.
Recommended subdomain names:
  • products.yourbrand.com
  • passport.yourbrand.com
  • verify.yourbrand.com
3

Add DNS records

After adding your domain, Avelero will provide DNS records that you need to add:CNAME record:
  • Points your subdomain to Avelero’s infrastructure
  • Add this record in your domain registrar’s DNS settings
TXT record (for verification):
  • Proves you own the domain
  • Also added in your DNS settings
Where to add DNS records:The exact location varies by provider, but generally:
  1. Log in to your domain registrar (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare, etc.)
  2. Find DNS settings or DNS management
  3. Add new records with the exact values provided by Avelero
  4. Save your changes
DNS changes can take up to 48 hours to propagate, but typically complete within a few hours.
4

Verify your domain

After adding DNS records:
  1. Return to the custom domain configuration in Avelero
  2. Click Verify Domain
  3. Avelero checks if the DNS records are correctly configured
Status indicators:
  • Verified (green dot): Domain is fully configured and active
  • Pending (yellow dot): DNS records are being checked, verification in progress
  • Verification Needed (red dot): DNS records are missing or incorrect
If verification fails:
  • Double-check the DNS records match exactly what Avelero provided
  • Wait a few hours for DNS propagation
  • Try verifying again

Each integration has specific setup instructions. Click on an integration to configure it.

Brand deletion

Brand deletion is permanent and cannot be undone. This option is only available to brand owners.
To delete your brand:
  1. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page
  2. In the Delete Brand section, click Delete
  3. Confirm by typing your brand name
  4. All products, passports, and data will be permanently deleted
Only delete your brand if you’re certain you no longer need it. Consider exporting data first if you want to keep records.

Best practices

Regularly review your brand settings, especially contact email and domain configuration. Outdated information can lead to missed customer inquiries or broken passport links.
Choose a slug that clearly represents your brand and is easy to remember. Avoid generic terms or acronyms that customers might not recognize.
After adding DNS records, verify your domain as soon as possible. Unverified domains won’t work for passport URLs and QR codes.
Setting up materials, attributes, and operators first saves significant time when creating multiple products. You can select from dropdowns instead of creating each time.
Give team members the minimum access they need. Reserve owner role for trusted administrators who need full control.

Troubleshooting

Problem: Custom domain shows “Verification Needed” Solution:
  1. Check that DNS records match exactly (copy-paste to avoid typos)
  2. Wait 1-4 hours for DNS propagation
  3. Use a DNS checker tool to verify records are published
  4. Try the verification again
Problem: Logo appears blurry Solution: Upload a higher resolution image. Logos should be at least 400x400 pixels. Larger is better for display on high-DPI screens. Problem: Can’t change brand slug Solution: Ensure the new slug meets requirements (lowercase, no spaces, alphanumeric plus hyphens). The slug may already be taken by another brand. Problem: Team member can’t see settings Solution: Some settings are owner-only. If they need access, an owner must change their role or make specific changes on their behalf.
