This guide walks you through creating your first Digital Product Passport from start to finish. You’ll learn how to add product information, materials, journey data, environmental metrics, and variants.

Before you start

For the best experience, set up your catalog data first:
  • Add materials you commonly use in Settings > Materials
  • Create product attributes (color, size, etc.) in Settings > Attributes
  • Add your manufacturing facilities in Settings > Operators
This preparation makes product creation faster and ensures consistency.

Creating a new passport

1

Navigate to the create page

From the main dashboard:
  1. Click Passports in the sidebar
  2. Click the Create passport button or the + icon
You’ll see the passport creation form with several sections.
2

Add basic information

Start by filling in the essential product details:Name (required)
  • Enter a clear, descriptive product name
  • As you type, a product handle is automatically generated (e.g., “Summer Tote Bag” becomes “summer-tote-bag”)
  • This handle will be used in your passport URLs
Description
  • Add a detailed product description (up to 2000 characters)
  • This appears on the public-facing Digital Product Passport
Image
  • Click the image upload area to select a product photo
  • Supported formats: JPG, PNG, WebP
  • Recommended size: At least 800x800px for best quality
The product handle can be customized in the right sidebar under Identifiers if you want a different URL structure.
3

Organize your product

The Organization section helps you categorize and find products:Category
  • Select the product category (optional)
  • Categories are defined in Settings > Attributes
Season
  • Assign the product to a season or collection
  • Manage seasons in Settings > Seasons
Tags
  • Add relevant tags for filtering and organization
  • Create tags in Settings > Tags
4

Define product variants

If your product comes in different versions (colors, sizes, etc.), set up variants:
If your product doesn’t have variants, you can skip this section. A single default variant will be created.
Add an attribute dimension:
  1. Click Select attribute or Add attribute
  2. Choose an existing attribute (e.g., “Color”) or create a custom one
  3. Select the values that apply to this product (e.g., “Black”, “Navy”, “White”)
Add multiple dimensions:
  • You can add up to 3 attribute dimensions (e.g., Color + Size + Material)
  • Avelero automatically generates all combinations
  • You can enable/disable specific combinations in the variant table
Set variant-specific data:For each variant, you can optionally add:
  • SKU: Stock keeping unit for inventory management
  • Barcode: Product barcode (EAN, UPC, etc.)
Variants are automatically enabled when created. You can disable variants you don’t sell by unchecking them in the variant table.
5

Add environmental data

The Environment section captures sustainability metrics:Carbon footprint
  • Enter the carbon emissions in kgCO2e (kilograms of CO2 equivalent)
  • This should reflect the product’s lifecycle emissions
Water usage
  • Enter water consumption in liters
  • Include all water used in production
Product weight
  • Enter the product weight in grams
  • This is the final product weight
All environmental fields are optional but highly recommended for transparency. You can leave them blank if data isn’t available yet and add it later.
Environmental data appears on the public Digital Product Passport, helping consumers make informed decisions.
6

Specify materials

The Materials section is where you document what the product is made of:Add a material:
  1. Click Add material to create a new row
  2. Select a material from your catalog (e.g., “Organic Cotton”)
  3. The country of origin auto-fills from the material’s catalog entry
  4. Enter the percentage (e.g., 95 for 95%)
Create new materials:
  • If a material isn’t in your catalog, type to search and click Create “Material Name”
  • Fill in the material details in the sheet that appears
  • The new material will be added to your catalog for future use
Material percentages:
  • The total should equal 100%
  • A running total is displayed at the bottom
  • If the total exceeds 100%, it will be highlighted in red
While material data is optional, providing complete and accurate material information is important for regulatory compliance in many regions.
7

Map the product journey

The Journey section documents your supply chain:Add a journey step:
  1. Click Add step to create a new row
  2. Select the production step (e.g., “Weaving”, “Dyeing”, “Assembly”)
    • Choose from predefined steps or type a custom one
  3. Select the operator (facility where this step occurs)
    • Choose from your operators list (Settings > Operators)
    • You can select multiple operators for one step
    • Click Create if the facility isn’t in your catalog yet
Reorder steps:
  • Drag the grip icon (⋮⋮) to reorder journey steps
  • Arrange them in the order they occur in production
Remove a step:
  • Click the three-dot menu (⋯) on a row
  • Select Delete
Journey data provides supply chain transparency, showing consumers where and how their product was made.
8

Configure identifiers and status

In the right sidebar, you’ll find additional settings:Status sidebar:
  • Draft: Product is hidden from public view (default)
  • Published: Product passport is publicly accessible
Start with Draft while you’re setting up, then switch to Published when ready.Identifiers sidebar:
  • Product handle: Customize the URL slug if needed
    • Must use lowercase letters, numbers, and dashes only
    • Should be unique and descriptive
  • Manufacturer: Select the manufacturer from your catalog (optional)
    • Manage manufacturers in Settings > Manufacturers
The product handle becomes part of the public URL for your Digital Product Passport. Choose something memorable and relevant.
9

Save and publish

When you’re ready to save:
  1. Click Save in the top-right corner
  2. The system validates your data:
    • Name and product handle are required
    • Material percentages must total 100% if provided
    • Environmental values must be positive numbers if provided
  3. If validation passes, your passport is saved
After saving:
  • You’ll be redirected to the passport edit page
  • You can continue editing any section
  • Set status to “Published” when ready to make it public
  • Share the passport URL with customers via QR codes or links
Unsaved changes are detected automatically. If you try to navigate away, you’ll be prompted to save or discard your work.

Working with variants

Variants deserve special attention as they can be complex:

Understanding the variant system

Automatic variant generation
  • When you add attribute dimensions (e.g., Color, Size), Avelero creates all possible combinations
  • For Color: Black, White and Size: S, M, L → you get 6 variants (Black-S, Black-M, Black-L, White-S, White-M, White-L)
Enabling and disabling variants
  • Not all combinations may exist (e.g., you might not sell Black-XL)
  • Uncheck variants you don’t sell in the variant table
  • Only enabled variants will be included in the passport
Variant metadata
  • Each variant can have its own SKU and barcode
  • Click on a variant row to expand and add this data
  • SKUs and barcodes help with inventory integration

Editing individual variants

For products with variants that need different data (different materials, different carbon footprint, etc.), you can create variant-specific overrides:
  1. Save your main product first
  2. Click on a variant in the variant table
  3. Navigate to the variant edit page
  4. Override any product-level data for this specific variant
Variant-specific overrides are advanced functionality. Most products can use the same data for all variants.

Tips for creating quality passports

Your product image is the first thing consumers see. Use clear, well-lit photos with a neutral background. Images should be at least 800x800 pixels for crisp display on all devices.
Avoid generic names like “T-Shirt”. Instead use “Organic Cotton Crew Neck T-Shirt” - this helps with SEO and makes products easier to find in your dashboard.
Even estimated environmental data is better than none. Transparency builds trust with consumers. You can update values as you gather more accurate lifecycle data.
Material composition affects recyclability and consumer allergies. Ensure percentages are accurate and total exactly 100%.
The journey section is powerful for storytelling. Show consumers the facilities involved, from raw material to finished product. This transparency differentiates your brand.

Common issues and solutions

Problem: Product handle is already taken Solution: Edit the product handle in the Identifiers sidebar to make it unique. Try adding a year, style number, or other differentiator. Problem: Material percentages show error Solution: Ensure all material percentages are positive numbers and the total equals exactly 100%. Check for typos or decimal errors. Problem: Can’t find an operator or material Solution: You may need to create it first in Settings > Operators or Settings > Materials. Alternatively, you can create it on-the-fly by typing the name and clicking “Create”. Problem: Variant combinations not appearing Solution: Make sure each attribute dimension has at least one value selected. Variants are only generated when all dimensions have values.

Next steps

Now that you’ve created your first product:
  • Publish your passport: Change the status to Published and share it with customers
  • Generate QR codes: Create QR codes that link to your passport
