Where abilities come from
The pool is assembled from several sources:- Standard Dota 2 abilities — virtually every active and passive ability from the full hero roster, minus a small number that crash the server or have no effect when used outside their original hero.
- Custom Redux abilities — original skills written specifically for this game mode (Flesh Heap variants, Lingering Souls, Arcane Mastery, Crater, Mana Laser, Side Gunner Redux, and more).
- Dota Imba (
imba_*) — enhanced versions of every hero’s abilities with amplified effects. - Imported packs — abilities from Angel Arena Reborn, Angel Arena Blackstar, Overflow, OneShot OneKill, Life in Arena, Holdout, Resurgence, OAA, Dusk, Retro Dota, EBF, and others.
- Neutral creep abilities — abilities belonging to neutral units, roshan, spirit bears, warlock golems, and more, grouped into curated pick groups.
How the skill picker works
At the start of each game, players open the skill picker and select their abilities up to the configured slot limit. The list is divided into brackets (categories) that determine which abilities appear together and under what conditions they are available. Certain abilities are restricted:- Single-player abilities are hidden from normal play and only appear when the single-player option is enabled.
- OP abilities live in a separate pool and require the OP ability option to be turned on before they show up.
- Troll combos are pairs or groups of abilities that are too strong in combination — the game prevents picking both at once.
How many abilities are there?
Theabilities.kv file that drives the picker contains over 3,300 lines of ability entries across all brackets. The exact selectable count varies by game options, but players reliably have access to hundreds of distinct skills at any given time.
