Legend

  • DC: Direct current power support
  • QC: Quick Charge (QC 2.0/3.0) support
  • PD: USB Power Delivery support
  • EPR: Extended Power Range (28V) support
  • BLE: Bluetooth Low Energy for remote control
  • Tip Sense: Ability to detect different tip types
  • N/A: Feature not applicable to this device

Important Notes

* Pinecil V1: No longer recommended. The V1 stopped being manufactured long ago. Models for sale online are generally clones or old stock being sold for more than Pine64 sells the V2.
** TS100: No longer recommended. Miniware started shipping TS100s using cloned STM32 chips. While these work with IronOS, their DFU bootloader works terribly, making it hard to flash larger firmware images without timing out.
*** TS80: No longer recommended. Replaced by the TS80P. Production ramped down long ago and only existing stock remains. The TS80P is far superior.
**** EPR/PPS with 28V support is disabled by default due to safety concerns. To enable it, set the “PD Mode” option in the Power settings submenu to “Safe” or “Default”.
***** TS101 Screen Compatibility: Some newer TS101 revisions use a different OLED screen model that is not yet supported by IronOS. See this bug report for more information.

Display Features

The TS101, S60, S60P irons and MHP30, T55 plates feature a higher resolution OLED than other devices. Work is ongoing to support this fully - for now a cropped view is usable.

Tip Sense Explained

Tip Sense refers to the device’s ability to distinguish between different tip types:
  • Regular TS100 or Hakko T12 style tips
  • Pine64’s custom shorter tips (lower resistance, allow for more power)
This feature is N/A for TS80/TS80P as there is only one model of tip for them.

  • Same tip compatibility as TS100
  • Spring pressure tip holding mechanism (easier to swap, less secure)
  • USB-C connector
Notes:
  • Uses STM32 clone MCU with quirks (screen performance not optimal but usable)
  • Bootloader for programming can be challenging
  • Miniware bootup logo burned into bootloader (cannot be removed)
  • IronOS can show custom logo after the Miniware logo
  • Higher resolution OLED (full resolution support in progress)
  • Quirks when loading custom logos - read documentation carefully

Miniware TS80

TS80

Successor to TS100 with custom smaller tips. Optimized for Quick Charge power banks.
Specifications:
  • Power: Quick Charge 3.0 (9V/2A, 18W max)
  • Custom smaller tips (better performance at lower wattages)
  • Does NOT support USB-PD
  • Will not work with USB-C power supplies in most cases
Notes:

Miniware TS80P

TS80P

Direct successor to TS80. Essentially what the TS80 should have been from the start.
Specifications:
  • Power: Quick Charge 3.0 (9V/2A, 12V/1.5A, 18W max)
  • Power: USB Power Delivery (9V/3A, 12V/3A, 30W max)
  • Same custom tips as TS80
  • Faster tip removal method
Notes:
  • Nearly identical to TS80 except with USB-PD support
  • Far better compatibility with modern power banks
  • Use valid PD device supporting 12V/3A for full 30W potential
  • Falls back to 9V/18W power mode with lower-spec supplies
  • Original firmware available here

Miniware MHP30

MHP30

Mini Hot Plate for reflow soldering with profile mode support.
Specifications:
  • Power: USB-PD
  • Profile mode support for reflow soldering
  • Contains buck DC/DC converter (better power supply utilization)
Hardware Details:
  • Accelerometer: MSA301 (mounted in middle of unit)
  • USB-PD: FUSB302
  • Hardware I2C bus on PB6/7 for MSA301 and FUSB302

Power Supply Considerations

For all devices EXCEPT MHP30: These soldering irons do NOT contain DC/DC converters.

Important Power Notes

Your power at the tip is a function of the supplied voltage. While irons support wide voltage ranges, always use a voltage near the upper limit where possible for best performance.
It is highly recommended to use a PD adapter where possible. This allows the iron to know the limitations of your supply and negotiate appropriately.
Marked irons can only turn the tip on and off in software - they cannot control maximum power drawn from the supply. When using PD, the iron may select a lower voltage than your power supply’s maximum to prevent overcurrent failures.
The MHP30 contains a buck DC/DC converter, which means it can utilize most power supplies fairly well. However, you should still aim for the highest reasonable voltage.
For more information about power management, see the power documentation.

Vendor Support & Open Hardware

Miniware

Miniware no longer provides source code, schematics, or support for any open source firmware on their devices. Only TS100, TS80, and TS80P are “open” to any extent. The TS80P was never truly open but is very similar to the TS80.
This generally doesn’t affect device performance, but it can mean slower support for newer products or difficulty resolving certain issues.

Sequre

Sequre has been supportive of the S60 by providing schematics to the community.

Pine64

Pine64 units (Pinecil) are fully open with schematics available on the Pine64 Wiki. They are currently:
  • The only vendor providing financial support to the IronOS project
  • The only vendor allowing direct contact with engineering teams
  • Designing hardware with IronOS in mind (Ralim consults with their engineering team)
This results in generally better support for these devices, though features are designed to work across all devices where possible.

Purchase Recommendations

Recommended Purchase refers only to buying a new device. All listed devices are supported and will work excellently for years to come.

Best Overall Choice

Pinecil V2

Most feature-complete device with BLE, EPR, tip sense, and the best community/vendor support.

Miniware TS80P

Excellent portable option with USB-PD support and compact form factor.

Specialized Use Cases

MHP30

Best for reflow soldering with profile mode support.

Sequre S60/S60P

Good alternative with vendor support and higher resolution display.

Devices to Avoid When Buying New

  • Pinecil V1: Replaced by V2, often overpriced
  • TS100: Cloned STM32 chips cause flashing issues
  • TS80: Replaced by TS80P with better features
