Launching Izzy

Izzy offers multiple ways to access the app:
  • Global hotkey: Press Option + Space (customizable) anywhere on your Mac to show or hide Izzy
  • Menu bar: Click the Izzy icon in your menu bar to open the app
  • Applications folder: Launch Izzy like any other macOS application

Searching for music

Open the search tab

Click the magnifying glass icon or press Cmd + F to focus the search bar.

Type your search query

Enter the name of a song, album, artist, or playlist. Results appear in real-time as you type.

Browse results

Search results are organized by category:
  • Songs: Individual tracks ready to play
  • Albums: Full album collections
  • Artists: Artist profiles with their music
  • Playlists: Curated collections

Play or add to queue

Click any result to play it immediately, or use the + button to add it to your queue.

Switching music services

Izzy supports three music streaming services: YouTube Music, Tidal, and JioSaavn.

Open settings

Click the gear icon (⚙️) at the bottom of the app or press Cmd + ,.

Select music source

Under the Music Source section at the top, choose your preferred service from the dropdown menu:
  • YouTube Music: Stream millions of songs
  • Tidal: Hi-Res lossless audio up to 24-bit/192kHz FLAC
  • JioSaavn: India’s largest music streaming platform

Configure quick switch mode

Choose how the provider switch button in the top-left corner works:
  • Dropdown Menu: Click to open a menu and select any provider directly
  • Click to Cycle: Click to cycle through providers one by one
When switching services, your search results and cache will be cleared automatically to ensure fresh content from the new service.

Creating and managing playlists

Navigate to playlists

Click the Playlists tab in the bottom navigation bar.

Create a new playlist

Click the Create Playlist button and give your playlist a name.

Add songs to your playlist

Browse search results, favorites, or your queue, then click the + button on any track to add it to a playlist.

Manage your playlist

  • Play: Click any song in the playlist to start playback
  • Reorder: Drag songs to rearrange them
  • Remove: Click the remove button to delete songs from the playlist
  • Delete: Delete the entire playlist from the playlist menu
Izzy’s AI-powered search lets you find music using natural language descriptions.

Add your Gemini API key

  1. Go to Settings (⚙️)
  2. Scroll to the AI Services section
  3. Enter your Gemini API key in the text field
  4. Get a free API key from Google AI Studio

Enable AI search

Toggle Show AI Search Tab to on in the AI Services settings.

Use AI search

Click the AI Search button (✨) and describe the music you want in natural language.Examples:
  • “upbeat workout music”
  • “relaxing jazz for study”
  • “sad songs for rainy days”
  • “energetic electronic dance music”

Browse AI recommendations

Gemini AI will understand your request and suggest songs that match your description based on mood, genre, and style.

Getting AI-powered recommendations

The “For You” section on the Home tab provides personalized music recommendations.

Set up AI recommendations

Add your Gemini API key in Settings under the AI Services section.

Build listening history

Play some songs to help the AI understand your music taste. The more you listen, the better the recommendations.

View recommendations

Go to the Home tab and look for the “For You” section with the AI badge (✨).

Refresh for new suggestions

Tap the refresh button to get completely new recommendations instantly. Each refresh:
  • Provides fresh songs you haven’t heard before
  • Filters out already played tracks automatically
  • Uses parallel API calls for ultra-fast results (2-4 seconds)
The AI analyzes your recently played songs to suggest similar tracks based on genre, mood, and style. The more you use Izzy, the better the recommendations become.

Managing your library

Favorites

Save your favorite tracks for easy access:
  • Click the heart icon on any song to add it to your favorites
  • Access all favorites from the Favorites tab
  • Remove songs by clicking the heart icon again

Recently played

Izzy automatically tracks your listening history:
  • View all recently played songs in the Recently Played tab
  • Songs appear in reverse chronological order (newest first)
  • Your history persists across app launches

Queue management

Control what plays next with the queue:
  • View the current queue from the playback controls
  • Add songs to the queue using the + button
  • Reorder songs by dragging them
  • Remove songs from the queue
  • Clear the entire queue with one click

Downloading songs (Tidal only)

When using Tidal as your music source, you can download songs in high quality.

Switch to Tidal

Set your music source to Tidal in Settings.

Find a song to download

Download buttons are available on:
  • Search results
  • Favorites
  • Queue
  • Playlists
  • Currently playing song

Click the download button

Click the download icon on any song. Izzy will:
  • Download in the highest quality available (Hi-Res Lossless > Hi-Res > Lossless > High)
  • Embed album artwork into the file using FFmpeg
  • Include full metadata (title, artist, album)

Find your downloads

Downloaded songs are saved to ~/Downloads/Izzy Music/. You’ll receive a macOS notification when each download completes.
FFmpeg must be installed on your system for album art embedding. Without FFmpeg, songs will still download but won’t include embedded artwork.

Playback controls

Basic controls

  • Play/Pause: Click the play button or press Space
  • Next track: Click the next button or press
  • Previous track: Click the previous button or press
  • Volume: Click the volume icon and drag the slider, or use and keys
  • Seek: Click anywhere on the progress bar or drag the playhead

Mini player

Enable the mini player for a compact, floating interface:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Toggle Mini Player to on
  3. A draggable, resizable window appears with full playback controls
  4. Features liquid glass design and stays on top of other windows
Control music directly from your menu bar:
  1. Go to Settings
  2. Toggle Menu Bar Player to on
  3. Click the Izzy icon in your menu bar to access playback controls and album artwork

Viewing lyrics

Izzy supports synchronized lyrics for songs:
  1. Start playing a song
  2. Click the lyrics button in the playback interface
  3. Lyrics will display and scroll automatically with the music
Lyrics availability depends on the music service and whether the song has synchronized lyrics available.

Background playback

Izzy continues playing music in the background when you:
  • Hide the app window with the global hotkey
  • Switch to other applications
  • Minimize the window
Playback will continue uninterrupted, and you can control it using:
  • macOS media keys (play/pause, next, previous)
  • Menu bar player
  • Mini player window
  • Global hotkey to show the main window
