Anchor’s tagging system helps you organize and find notes quickly. Create custom tags, assign colors for visual distinction, and filter your notes to find exactly what you need.

Creating Tags

Set up your organizational system by creating tags:
1

Open tag manager

Navigate to the Tags section from the sidebar or main menu
2

Create new tag

Click “New Tag” and enter a descriptive name
3

Choose a color (optional)

Select a color to visually distinguish this tag from others
4

Save tag

Your new tag is now available to apply to any note
Choose tag names that reflect categories or topics that make sense for your workflow. Common examples include “Work”, “Personal”, “Ideas”, “Important”, or project names.

Tag Colors

Customize tags with colors for quick visual identification:

Visual Organization

Use different colors to distinguish between tag types or priority levels

Quick Scanning

Colored tags help you quickly identify note categories at a glance

Choosing Colors

  • Select colors that match your mental model of categories
  • Use consistent color schemes (e.g., warm colors for urgent, cool colors for reference)
  • Leave some tags uncolored if you prefer minimal styling
  • Change colors any time without affecting your notes
Tag colors are synchronized across all your devices, ensuring consistent visual organization wherever you access your notes.

Applying Tags to Notes

Add tags to notes to organize your content:

While Creating a Note

  1. Create a new note
  2. Click the tag icon in the note editor
  3. Select one or more tags from your tag list
  4. Tags appear on the note immediately

To Existing Notes

  1. Open the note you want to tag
  2. Click the tag icon or tag area
  3. Add or remove tags as needed
  4. Changes save automatically
You can apply multiple tags to a single note, making it easy to categorize notes in multiple ways.

Managing Tags

Keep your tag system organized:

Editing Tags

1

Open tag settings

Navigate to the Tags section and select the tag you want to modify
2

Update properties

Change the tag name or color
3

Save changes

Updates apply automatically to all notes using this tag

Deleting Tags

Remove tags you no longer need:
  1. Open the Tags section
  2. Select the tag to delete
  3. Click the delete button
  4. Confirm deletion
Deleting a tag removes it from all notes. The notes themselves remain unchanged, but the tag association is removed.
Deleted tags are soft-deleted and kept for 30 days to enable synchronization across devices, then permanently removed.

Filtering by Tags

Use tags to quickly find related notes:

View Notes by Tag

  1. Click on any tag in the Tags section
  2. View all notes assigned to that tag
  3. Notes are sorted by most recent first
  4. Click any note to open it
Combine tags with search to narrow results:
  • Filter the main notes list by selecting a tag
  • Only notes with that tag appear
  • Use the search box to further filter by content
  • Clear the filter to return to all notes

Single Tag Filter

Click a tag to see only notes with that specific tag

Note Count

Each tag displays the number of active notes using it

Tag Organization Strategies

Make the most of your tagging system:

By Category

Organize notes by broad topics:
  • Work vs Personal
  • Projects by name
  • Content types (meetings, ideas, documentation)

By Status

Track note progress:
  • Todo / In Progress / Done
  • Draft / Final
  • Review / Approved

By Priority

Highlight importance:
  • Urgent
  • Important
  • Reference
  • Low Priority

By Context

Group by when or where you’ll use them:
  • Meeting Notes
  • Client Work
  • Home Projects
  • Learning Resources
Develop a tagging strategy that matches your workflow. Start simple with a few key tags and expand as you discover what organization works best for you.

Tag Properties

Each tag includes:
PropertyDescription
NameUnique identifier for the tag within your account
ColorOptional color for visual distinction
Note CountNumber of active notes using this tag
CreatedWhen the tag was first created
UpdatedWhen the tag was last modified
Tag names must be unique within your account. If you try to create a tag with a name that already exists, you’ll be prompted to choose a different name.

Multi-Device Tag Sync

Your tags synchronize seamlessly:
  • Create tags on any device and they appear everywhere
  • Edit tag properties and changes propagate across devices
  • Delete tags and removals sync when devices connect
  • Offline changes sync automatically when back online
1

Work offline

Create and manage tags even without internet connectivity
2

Automatic sync

When you reconnect, tag changes sync across all your devices
3

Conflict resolution

If the same tag is modified on multiple devices, the most recent change wins

Best Practices

Optimize your tag organization:

Keep It Simple

  • Start with 5-10 core tags
  • Add more only when you find yourself repeatedly needing new categories
  • Avoid over-tagging - not every note needs multiple tags

Be Consistent

  • Use the same naming conventions (e.g., “Work - Project” vs “Work/Project”)
  • Apply tags consistently across similar notes
  • Review and clean up unused tags periodically

Use Colors Meaningfully

  • Assign colors based on importance, type, or context
  • Keep your color scheme consistent
  • Don’t feel obligated to color every tag

Review Regularly

  • Periodically audit your tags for duplicates or unused tags
  • Merge similar tags when appropriate
  • Delete tags that no longer serve a purpose
Avoid creating too many highly specific tags. This can make organization more complex rather than simpler. Focus on broad categories that help you find notes quickly.

Tag Limitations

  • Tag names must be unique per user
  • Tags are private to your account (not shared between users)
  • When notes are shared, recipients see the tags but cannot edit them (only note owners can modify tags)
  • Deleted tags are permanently purged after 30 days
The tag system works fully offline. All tag operations - create, edit, delete, and filter - function without an internet connection and sync when you’re back online.
