The Beach Mystery has four distinct endings, each one unlocking a different facet of the beach’s secret. Which ending you reach depends entirely on the choices you make at the story’s three key decision points: whether to open the chest, whether to follow the map, and which path to take inside the cave. Discovered endings are permanently recorded as achievements in your browser’s localStorage, so the Endings page in the app tracks exactly which mysteries you have uncovered across all your playthroughs.

The Four Endings

How to Reach It

This is the only ending that requires solving a riddle. It is reachable via a single path.Storyline 1 — The Island Adventurer:

What Happens

You rent a small boat from the beach dock and sail toward the island drawn in faded ink on the map. The crossing is rough — waves slap the hull, spray stings your face, and a bank of mist briefly swallows the island entirely. When the mist thins, a green island rises exactly where the map promised.You beach the boat and find two silent guards at the start of a narrow path. The first confirms that only the one holding the map may pass. The second steps forward with a riddle: “I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with the wind. What am I?” When you answer echo, both guards smile. The man with the key unlocks a vine-covered gate and steps aside.The trail winds through ferns taller than your shoulders, past three carved stones and a shallow stream, until it ends in a sunlit clearing. A huge gnarled oak stands at the center — the same tree drawn beside the X on the map. A beam of sunlight falls through its branches onto a mound of old coins and golden objects nestled between the roots.Beside the treasure, your favorite animal sleeps peacefully in the warm grass. Around its neck is a small tag bearing the same symbol as your jewel. The animal wakes, looks at you without fear, and nudges a wooden box from under one root. Inside is a note: the treasure belongs to whoever reaches the island with courage, wisdom, and respect.You take only a single gold coin as proof of your journey. When you leave, the guardian watches from beneath the oak, and the hidden island fades into the mist behind your boat. Back on the beach, the coin and the jewel are still warm in your hand.
This ending is the only one that makes the island’s connection to the jewel explicit — the guardian on the island wears the same symbol as the one found on the stone door in the cave and above the den guardian’s bed.

What Happens — With the Jewel (Storyline 2)

Inside the cave, your jewel begins to glow softly through your pocket. Its light reveals old arrows scratched into the wall and leads you safely to the fork. You take the left passage, and the glow brightens with every step.At the end of the corridor, the jewel’s light falls across a stone door carved with the same symbol that appears on your jewel. When you hold the stone near the carving, the door rumbles open and reveals a hidden chamber: old coins, jeweled cups, and silver crowns cover every surface. A carved pedestal at the center has an empty space that matches the jewel’s shape exactly.You decide not to leave the jewel behind. Instead, you take one small coin and close the door. A second passage leads you back to the open beach. The jewel stops glowing once you return to the sunlight — but now you understand that it is a key to mysteries still waiting beneath the shore.

What Happens — Without the Jewel (Storyline 5)

Without a light source, a line of pale shells embedded in the rock guides you deeper into the dark. The left passage narrows until you must turn sideways between the rocks — just as you consider going back, the tunnel opens into a chamber lit by shafts of sunlight from cracks high above.The chamber is identical: coins, jeweled cups, and silver crowns. The stone pedestal in the center has an empty jewel-shaped space. Standing here, you realize that the chest on the beach and this chamber must be connected — the missing jewel is still inside the chest you chose not to open.You take one weathered coin and leave the rest untouched. A second tunnel returns you to the beach. Looking back toward the buried chest, you smile. You may not know every part of the mystery yet, but you know exactly where your next adventure should begin.

What Happens — With the Jewel (Storyline 3)

Your jewel lights the way through the dark until you reach the fork. You take the right passage. The sound of breathing grows clearer, but it is slow and peaceful — not threatening.The tunnel opens into a cozy den lined with dry grass, shells, and bits of sea glass. Curled at the center is your favorite animal. The same symbol marked on your jewel glows faintly above its bed. The animal wakes and watches you. When you place the jewel on the ground to show that you mean no harm, it gently pushes the stone back toward you.Then the guardian leads you to a hidden opening in the cave wall overlooking the open sea. From there, you can clearly see the distant island drawn on the map. You understand: this creature is not trapped here. It is a guardian watching over both the cave and the island. After a quiet moment beside the sea-facing opening, the guardian leads you safely outside. You leave with the jewel, a new friend, and the feeling that the beach’s mysteries have only just begun.

What Happens — Without the Jewel (Storyline 6)

A line of pale shells guides you to the fork. You choose the right passage. The breathing beyond the bend is calm, and when the tunnel opens into the den, the animal opens one eye, studies you, and seems to decide you are no danger.Rather than moving closer, you sit quietly at the edge of the den. After a moment, the animal rises and leads you through a side tunnel to a hidden opening above the ocean. Fresh air and sunlight pour inside. The animal wears a small tag shaped exactly like a treasure map.You realize the cave has a guardian and that the buried chest may be one part of a much larger secret. The guardian shows you a safe path back to the shore. You leave without gold or jewels — but with a discovery far rarer than either.

What Happens — With the Jewel (Storyline 4)

You opened the chest, pocketed the jewel, and decided not to follow the map. When you reach the cave, the darkness beyond the entrance feels too uncertain, and you decide not to enter. Your fingers close around the smooth jewel as you continue along the shore.By the time you turn back, the sky has become a wash of orange, pink, and violet. The tide has erased your earlier footprints, leaving the beach quiet and new. You make a quiet promise to keep the jewel safe and return when you are ready to learn how the chest, the cave, and the distant island are connected. You head home beneath the first evening stars, carrying one beautiful piece of the mystery with you.

What Happens — Without the Jewel (Storyline 7)

You left the chest buried and decided the cave was too dark to explore safely without a light. You spend the rest of the afternoon collecting shells, watching seabirds dive, and listening to waves echo faintly inside the cliff.At sunset, you pass the very place where the old chest is still hidden beneath the sand. You leave it undisturbed — a mystery does not have to be solved the moment it is found. On the walk home, you think about the chest and the cave and wonder whether they might be connected. It was still a very good walk — and perhaps the beginning of another adventure, whenever you decide to return.
The Peaceful Shore is the only ending where the beach itself becomes the final scene. Both variations end at the beach-sunset gallery scene — the tide coming in, the sky changing color, the mystery intact.

The Achievements System

The game automatically tracks which endings you have discovered across all playthroughs. Achievements are stored in your browser and persist between sessions.

Storage

Discovered ending IDs are saved in localStorage under the key beach-mystery-achievements as a JSON array of ending ID strings. For example, a player who has found three of the four endings would have: 
["islandTreasure", "hiddenChamber", "peacefulWalk"]
The possible values in this array correspond to the ending id fields in the source data: islandTreasure, hiddenChamber, animalDen, and peacefulWalk.

The Endings Page

The Endings page (accessible at the /endings route in the app) gives you a full view of your progress. At the top of the page, a progress ring displays X of 4 Discovered — updating automatically as you unlock new endings through play. Each of the four ending cards on that page behaves differently depending on whether you have discovered it:
  • Undiscovered endings show a 🔒 lock overlay. The ending name and icon are visible, but the description and path information are hidden until you find the ending in play.
  • Discovered endings unlock the full card: the ending name, icon, complete description, and the list of storylines that lead to it are all revealed.
To discover all four endings and complete the achievement set, you need to play at least four separate runs — one for each unique ending: follow the map to the island (Storyline 1), enter the cave and go left (Storyline 2 or 5), enter the cave and go right (Storyline 3 or 6), and skip the cave entirely (Storyline 4 or 7). Since hiddenChamber, animalDen, and peacefulWalk are each reachable two ways, you have flexibility in how you collect them.
Each discovered ending card on the /endings page also shows which storylines lead to it, so you can see at a glance which paths you have already walked and which variations remain. The Storylines page provides the full path details for every named storyline.
