Every playthrough of The Beach Mystery begins in the same place — a sunlit beach, a buried chest, and a moment of curiosity — but the story quickly diverges based on three key decisions: whether to open the chest, whether to follow the map (if you found one), and whether to enter the cave. Those three branch points produce seven distinct named storylines, each with its own cast of details drawn from your personalization answers and its own emotional resolution. No two storylines are identical, but every one of them is complete.

Decision Tree

The diagram below shows how the three branch points connect. Each storyline number appears at the leaf where it ends.

All Seven Storylines

Path:
  1. Open Chest → Yes
  2. Follow Map → Yes
  3. Solve Riddle → Echo
You open the chest, find the treasure map and a brilliant jewel, and decide the map is too important to ignore. You rent a small boat from the beach dock and sail toward the island marked with an X. After navigating a bank of mist, you beach the boat on white sand and face two silent guards who demand you answer their riddle. You answer correctly — echo — and the vine-covered gate swings open. Following the trail past carved stones and a shallow stream, you arrive at a sunlit clearing dominated by a great gnarled oak. A sleeping guardian rests beside a mound of old coins and golden objects, wearing a tag bearing the same symbol as your jewel. You take only a single gold coin as proof of your journey.Ending: 🏝️ The Island’s Secret (islandTreasure)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → Yes
  2. Follow Map → No
  3. Enter Cave → Yes
  4. Path → Left
You open the chest, pocket the jewel, and decide that crossing unfamiliar water alone is too risky today. You return the map to the chest and continue along the shore until you find a cave opening half-hidden by hanging vines. Inside, your jewel begins to glow, lighting old arrows scratched into the wall and guiding you to a fork. You take the left passage. The jewel grows brighter with every step until its light falls on a stone door carved with the same symbol as the jewel itself. Holding the jewel near the carving, the door rumbles open to reveal a hidden chamber of old coins, jeweled cups, and silver crowns, with a pedestal waiting for the jewel at its center. You take one small coin and leave.Ending: 💎 The Hidden Treasure Chamber (hiddenChamber)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → Yes
  2. Follow Map → No
  3. Enter Cave → Yes
  4. Path → Right
You pocket the jewel, leave the map, and find the cave farther down the shore. The jewel guides you through the dark until you reach the fork. You take the right passage. The sound of breathing grows clearer but stays slow and peaceful. The tunnel opens into a cozy den lined with dry grass, shells, and sea glass. A beautiful animal is curled at the center — the same symbol from your jewel glowing faintly above its bed. When you set the jewel on the ground as a gesture of peace, the animal gently pushes it back toward you, then leads you to a hidden opening overlooking the sea. From there, the distant island from the map is clearly visible. You realize the guardian watches over both the cave and the island.Ending: 🐾 The Guardian’s Den (animalDen)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → Yes
  2. Follow Map → No
  3. Enter Cave → No
You opened the chest, pocketed the jewel, and decided not to follow the map. When you reach the cave entrance, the darkness beyond feels too uncertain. You trust your instincts and stay on the open shore. Your fingers close around the smooth jewel as you continue along the beach. By the time you turn back, the sky has become a wash of orange, pink, and violet. You make a quiet promise to return when you are ready to learn how the chest, the cave, and the distant island are connected — and you head home under the first evening stars with the jewel warm in your hand.Ending: 🌅 The Peaceful Shore (peacefulWalk)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → No
  2. Enter Cave → Yes
  3. Path → Left
You decide not to disturb the chest and continue your walk. Beyond a ridge of black rocks, the beach narrows and a cave mouth opens in the cliff ahead. Curiosity wins and you step inside, keeping one hand on the cool stone wall. A line of pale shells embedded in the rock guides you to a fork, and you choose the left passage. The tunnel narrows until you must turn sideways between the rocks — but just as you consider turning back, the passage opens into a chamber lit by shafts of sunlight from cracks high above. Coins, jeweled cups, and silver crowns cover the floor. A stone pedestal in the center has an empty jewel-shaped space. You realize the chest on the beach and this chamber must be connected, and take one weathered coin as proof.Ending: 💎 The Hidden Treasure Chamber (hiddenChamber)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → No
  2. Enter Cave → Yes
  3. Path → Right
You leave the chest undisturbed and walk on until you reach the cave. You step inside and follow the pale shell trail to the fork. The right tunnel is warm and the breathing beyond its bend is calm. The passage opens into a cozy den lined with dry grass, smooth shells, and colorful sea glass. A beautiful animal opens one eye and decides you are no danger. You sit quietly at the edge of the den rather than moving closer, and after a moment the animal rises and leads you through a side tunnel to a hidden opening above the ocean. It wears a small tag shaped like a treasure map. You leave without gold or jewels — but with a discovery far rarer than either.Ending: 🐾 The Guardian’s Den (animalDen)
Path:
  1. Open Chest → No
  2. Enter Cave → No
You leave the chest where it lies. Farther down the shore, the cave looks too dark to enter safely without a light, so you stay on the open beach. You spend the afternoon collecting shells, watching seabirds dive, and listening to the waves echo faintly inside the cliff. At sunset, you pass the place where the old chest is still hidden beneath the sand. You leave it undisturbed — a mystery does not have to be solved the moment it is found. On the walk home, you think about the chest and the cave and wonder whether they might be connected.Ending: 🌅 The Peaceful Shore (peacefulWalk)

Endings by Storyline

The table below groups the seven storylines by the ending they produce.

The Hidden Treasure Chamber💎Storyline 2 — The Jewel-Lit Explorer, Storyline 5 — The Wary Treasure Hunter
The Guardian’s Den🐾Storyline 3 — The Guardian’s Friend, Storyline 6 — The Gentle Explorer
The Peaceful Shore🌅Storyline 4 — The Jewel Keeper, Storyline 7 — The Peaceful Walker

The Jewel’s Role in the Cave

When you carry the jewel into the cave (Storylines 2 and 3), the experience is richer in detail but structurally identical to the no-jewel versions (Storylines 5 and 6). In both cases you reach the same fork and make the same left-or-right choice. The difference is what the jewel reveals along the way:
  • Left passage with jewel: The stone glows brighter as you approach the hidden chamber’s door, which bears the same carved symbol as the jewel itself. Holding the jewel near the carving causes the door to open — the jewel is literally the key.
  • Right passage with jewel: The same symbol appears above the guardian’s bed, glowing faintly. Placing the jewel on the ground is interpreted as a peaceful greeting, and the guardian leads you to a sea-facing overlook where the island from the map is visible.
  • Without the jewel: A line of pale shells guides you through the darkness instead, and the connection between the cave and the chest is revealed as something you notice and reflect on — a mystery you now know how to complete.
The hasJewel and hasMap state flags are set when you open the chest and are carried through every subsequent node. Story text and scene details adapt accordingly throughout the cave sections.
