The Beach Mystery is a personalized choose-your-own-adventure story set on a sunlit shoreline. You are walking along the water’s edge when your foot strikes something hard beneath the sand — an old pirate’s chest, salt-crusted and long forgotten. From that single discovery, the story branches into seven distinct paths. You might cross rough seas to a mist-covered island, descend into a cave hiding a centuries-old treasure chamber, befriend a magical guardian deep underground, or simply carry the jewel home beneath a painted sunset. Every choice is your own, and every path resolves the mystery in a different way.

Story Beats

The following steps trace the full narrative from the first greeting to the final scene, covering every major location and decision in the order they are encountered.
1

The Beach Opening

The story begins with a personal greeting — the game uses your name, entered before the adventure starts, to welcome you directly. The scene is warm and unhurried: sunlight dances across the water, gulls circle overhead, and a salty breeze rolls in off the sea. You walk close to the shoreline, feeling cool sand beneath your toes, until your foot bumps against something hard and straight-edged just below the surface. After digging with both hands, you uncover an object much larger than expected. The beachOpening node hands off to chestDiscovery, where the object is finally revealed in full.
2

The Chest Discovery

The buried object is an old pirate’s chest — wood weathered by the sea, metal bands crusted with salt. You brush away the last of the sand and glance at your watch (the face features your favorite cartoon character). The beach is empty in both directions. Whatever is locked inside has been waiting a very long time. The chestDiscovery node leads immediately to the story’s first decision point.
3

The Chest Choice

The chestChoice node presents the first branch: do you have time to open the chest? Choosing Yes opens the lid to reveal a folded treasure map and a brilliant jewel — its color and type matching the answers you gave during personalization. Choosing No means you leave it buried, continue your walk, and head directly toward the cave at the far end of the beach. This single decision determines whether you carry a jewel and a map for the rest of the adventure.
4

The Map Choice

If you opened the chest, the mapChoice node asks whether you want to follow the map. The dotted route begins at this very beach and crosses the sea to a small island marked with an X beneath an ancient tree. Choosing Yes sends you to rent a boat and sail toward the island. Choosing No means you return the map to the chest for safekeeping, pocket the jewel, and head farther down the shore toward the cave.
5

The Island Path

The followMap node covers the sea crossing — waves slapping the hull, spray in your face, a bank of mist that briefly swallows the island. When the mist clears, you beach the boat on white sand and find two silent guards blocking the path into the brush. One carries a lantern; the other wears a brass key. The first guard confirms that only the one holding the map may pass. The second guard steps forward with a riddle that must be solved before the vine-covered gate will open. The riddleIntro node presents the challenge in full: “I speak without a mouth and hear without ears. I have no body, but I come alive with the wind. What am I?” The answer is echo. Answer correctly, and the guards smile, the gate unlocks, and the island path is yours.
6

The Cave Entrance

Whether you skipped the chest entirely or chose not to follow the map, the story eventually brings you to a cave set into the cliff face. The caveChoiceWithJewel and caveChoiceWithoutMap nodes both describe the same dark opening — hung with vines, cool air whispering from somewhere deep inside — but the framing differs slightly depending on what you carry. With the jewel, the cave air carries a faint sparkle that reminds you of the stone in your pocket. Without it, a line of pale shells embedded in the rock wall serves as your only guide. In both cases, you decide: enter or walk on.
7

The Cave Fork

Once inside, both caveEnteredWithJewel and caveEnteredWithoutJewel lead to a fork where the tunnel splits in two. The left passage carries a cool breeze and, if you have the jewel, a faint golden shimmer. The right passage is warmer, and from somewhere beyond its bend comes the quiet sound of steady breathing. The cavePathChoice nodes ask which tunnel you take — a choice that leads to two entirely different endings.
8

The Endings

Each path resolves the beach mystery differently. Solving the island riddle uncovers a sunlit clearing and a sleeping guardian beside an ancient oak. The left cave passage opens into a hidden chamber of coins, jeweled cups, and silver crowns. The right cave passage leads to a cozy den where a peaceful magical creature has been guarding both the cave and the distant island all along. Turning away from the cave — or setting the map aside — ends the day on a quiet shore at golden hour, with a promise to return. All four endings are described in full on the Endings page.
The app includes a gallery of eight illustrated scenes, each corresponding to a key location or moment in the story. The table below lists every scene in narrative order.
Scene IDTitleWhat It Shows
beachThe ShoreWhere your journey begins — sun, sand, and the sound of waves.
chestThe Pirate’s ChestAn old wooden chest buried beneath the beach, bands crusted with salt.
mapThe Treasure MapA weathered route pointing across the sea to a hidden island marked with an X.
islandThe Hidden IslandA mist-covered island protected by two mysterious guards at the trailhead.
caveThe Dark CaveA damp passage connecting the open beach to secrets hidden underground.
treasureThe Hidden ChamberAn ancient collection of coins, cups, and crowns concealed beneath the cliffs.
denThe Guardian’s DenA warm, grass-lined refuge deep inside the cave, home to a magical guardian.
sunsetThe Peaceful ShoreA quiet ending — the tide erases your footprints, and the sky burns orange and violet.
Gallery scenes are displayed as atmospheric artwork throughout the story. The scene rendered at any given node is determined by the scene property of that node — so the chest-open scene, for example, appears only after you lift the lid.

What Connects Everything

The chest, the cave, and the island are not three separate mysteries — they are three parts of one. The jewel found in the chest is a key that opens the stone door in the hidden chamber and identifies the guardian in the cave. The map leads to an island where a sleeping animal wears a tag bearing the same symbol as the jewel. Even the peaceful ending hints at the connection: you leave the cave unexplored knowing that the chest and the dark cliff are somehow bound together, and that the real adventure waits for your return.
