Creating tests in Evaly is simple and flexible. You can build tests from scratch, organize them with sections, and configure them to meet your assessment needs.

Creating Your First Test

Tests are the foundation of assessments in Evaly. Each test can contain multiple sections with different types of questions.
1

Navigate to Tests

From your dashboard, click on the Tests tab in the sidebar to view all your tests.
2

Create a New Test

Click the Create Test button. A new test draft will be created with a default section.
3

Configure Basic Settings

Fill in the test details:
  • Title: Give your test a descriptive name
  • Description: Add optional context about the test
  • Access: Choose between Public or Private

Test Structure

Sections

Tests are organized into sections, which help you:
  • Group related questions together
  • Set different time limits for different parts
  • Organize content by topic or difficulty
Each test includes at least one section by default. You can add more sections from the Questions page.

Test Status

Tests can be in one of four states:

Draft

Test is being created but not yet published. Only visible to you.

Scheduled

Test is published but scheduled to start at a future date/time.

Active

Test is currently live and participants can take it.

Finished

Test has ended, either manually or automatically.

Publishing Tests

Once your test is ready, you can publish it to make it available to participants.
Publish your test to start immediately:
  1. Click Publish on the test page
  2. Select Start Now
  3. Configure optional end time
  4. Click Publish Test
The test becomes active immediately and participants can access it.
When using section-based durations, ensure the total duration of all sections fits within your test availability window.

Duration Modes

Evaly supports two ways to control test timing:

Schedule-Based Duration

Set an availability window for the entire test:
  • Define when the test starts and ends
  • Participants can work at their own pace within this window
  • Flexible for self-paced assessments

Section-Based Duration

Set individual time limits for each section:
  • Each section has its own countdown timer
  • More control over pacing
  • Better for timed assessments
When using section-based durations, all sections must have a duration set before publishing. The total section duration cannot exceed the test’s availability window.

Duplicating Tests

Save time by duplicating existing tests:
  1. Find the test you want to copy
  2. Click the three-dot menu
  3. Select Duplicate
The duplicate includes:
  • All sections and questions
  • Question settings and options
  • Test structure
Not included:
  • Publishing status (duplicates start as drafts)
  • Participant data
  • Results and grades
  • Schedule information

Test Actions

Once published, you can manage active tests:
Temporarily freeze the test timer for all participants:
  • All participant timers stop
  • No new progress can be made
  • Duration is preserved when resumed
Use this for:
  • Technical difficulties
  • Unexpected interruptions
  • Announcements during the test
Continue a paused test:
  • All timers restart from where they stopped
  • End time is automatically adjusted
  • Participants can continue immediately
Add additional time to an active test:
  • Add minutes to the current end time
  • Or set a new end time directly
  • Applies to all participants
Manually end a test before the scheduled time:
  • Test becomes finished immediately
  • No new submissions accepted
  • Existing submissions are preserved
  • Cannot be resumed

Plan Limits

The number of active tests you can run simultaneously depends on your subscription plan:
  • Free Plan: 1 active test
  • Pro Plan: 5 active tests
  • Teams Plan: Unlimited active tests
Active tests include both running tests and scheduled tests. Finish or unpublish tests to free up slots.

Best Practices

  1. Test Before Publishing: Always review your test and questions before publishing
  2. Clear Instructions: Add a description explaining the test format and expectations
  3. Appropriate Timing: Set realistic time limits based on question count and complexity
  4. Section Organization: Group related questions into logical sections
  5. Backup Plans: Know how to pause or extend time in case of issues
