This guide covers how to dump Sonic Unleashed using a USB storage device. You will configure the USB drive as an Xbox 360 system drive, install the game to it, then connect it to your PC and use Velocity to copy the files. If you would rather use the Xbox 360 Hard Drive Transfer Cable method, see the Hard Drive guide instead.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, make sure you have all of the following:
  • Xbox 360 (no modifications required)
  • USB Storage Device (16 GB minimum)
  • Sonic Unleashed for Xbox 360 (US or EU — JP is not supported)
    • Retail disc or digital copy (available on the Xbox Store)
    • Title Update required
    • Adventure Pack DLC (optional but highly recommended — includes high-quality lighting for the entire game)
  • 7-Zip — for extracting Velocity
  • Velocity (Gualdimar’s fork)
Some Xbox 360 S|E consoles come with 4 GB of internal flash storage. These models are not compatible with this method because you cannot configure a USB storage device as a system drive when internal flash storage is present.An exception exists for models with the Trinity motherboard, where the flash storage module sits on a separate daughterboard that can be disconnected — though this is not recommended for inexperienced users. On other affected models the module is soldered directly onto the motherboard and cannot be removed.If your console falls into this category, use the Hard Drive guide instead.

Remove the hard drive from the console

Turn off your Xbox 360 and remove the hard drive from your console.
If you are unsure how to remove the hard drive from your specific console model, consult one of the following iFixit guides:

Connect the USB drive and power on the console

Connect your USB storage device to the console and turn it on.

Open Storage settings

At the Xbox Dashboard, navigate to the Settings tab, select System, then select Storage.

Open Device Options for the USB drive

On the Storage Devices screen, select your USB storage device and press Y to open Device Options.

Configure the USB drive as a system drive

Select Make System Drive, then Configure Now, and confirm by selecting Yes.
This operation will erase all existing content on the USB storage device. Make sure you have backed up anything important before continuing. This action is irreversible!

Reconnect the hard drive

After the USB storage device has been successfully configured as a system drive, turn off your console and reconnect the hard drive.

Move your Xbox Live profile to the USB drive

Turn on your console, then navigate to the Settings tab, select System, then Storage. Select your original hard drive, navigate to the Profiles directory, and move an Xbox Live profile that owns the game and its DLC to the USB storage device.

Remove the hard drive and sign in

Turn off the console and remove the hard drive. Turn the console back on, install any system update if prompted, then sign in to the Xbox Live profile you just moved.

Install the game from disc

Insert your retail disc copy of Sonic Unleashed into the Xbox 360 disc tray.
If you have a digital copy of Sonic Unleashed, skip ahead to Step 12 to download the game and DLC directly from your Download History.

Open Game Details

At the Xbox Dashboard, go to the disc tile under the Home tab and press X to view Game Details.

Install to the USB drive

Under the Overview tab, select the Install tile and choose to install the game to the USB drive.

Download the game and DLC from Download History

Return to the Xbox Dashboard and navigate to the Settings tab, then select Account, then Download History. Look for Sonic Unleashed (if you own it digitally) and all of its Adventure Pack DLC. Select each item and choose Download Again. Repeat this for every piece of DLC you own.
If the game or its DLC do not appear in Download History, make sure you have moved the account that owns them to the USB drive and that you are currently signed into it.

Confirm the Title Update is installed

Once everything has finished downloading, launch the game to verify that the Title Update is installed. If it is not, you will be prompted to install it at this point.
If the DLC is functioning correctly, the Title Update is already installed.To confirm DLC is working, you should see a message in yellow text that reads “You can play downloaded action stages […]” when loading a save file. Alternatively, look for a DLC globe indicator on relevant countries on the world map.If you are still unsure, you can force the Title Update to reinstall by clearing the system cache (found in Storage → Device Options) and then relaunching the game while connected to Xbox Live.

Connect the USB drive to your PC

Turn off the console and connect the USB storage device to your PC.

Extract Velocity

Download the latest release of Velocity. Open the .rar file using 7-Zip and extract its contents to a convenient location on your PC.

Create a destination folder

Create a new folder somewhere convenient on your PC. This is where you will store the copied game files.

Run Velocity as Administrator (Windows only)

Right-click Velocity.exe and select Properties. Under the Compatibility tab, tick Run this program as an administrator, then click OK. This is required for Velocity to detect and read the USB storage device.
If you are on Linux, skip this step and launch Velocity directly.

Open the Device Content Viewer

Launch Velocity.exe. When it starts, you should see a Device Detected prompt asking if you would like to open the Device Content Viewer. Click Yes.

Navigate to the game and DLC content

In the Device Content Viewer you will see a tree view of your storage device’s contents. Expand the following nodes:
  • /Shared Items/Games/
  • /Shared Items/DLC/ (only if you have the DLC installed)

Select all content to copy

Hold the Ctrl key and click SONIC UNLEASHED under the Games node. If you have the DLC installed, also click each Adventure Pack under the DLC node. Make sure all desired items are selected before continuing.

Copy the game files to your PC

Right-click any of the selected items and choose Copy Selected to Local Disk. Navigate to the folder you created in Step 16 and select it. Velocity will now copy all selected content to your PC.

Open the Raw Device Viewer

Once the transfer is complete, close the Device Content Viewer window. In the menu bar, navigate to Tools → Device Tools → Raw Device Viewer.

Find the Title Update file

Navigate to /System Cache/Cache/ and click the Name column header to sort by name. Look for a file whose name begins with TU_19KA20I — this is the Title Update, which is required for installation.
To verify the file is correct, double-click it to open it in Package Viewer. Confirm that default.xexp is present inside, along with a folder named work. Once verified, close the Package Viewer window and continue.

Copy the Title Update to your PC

Right-click the TU_19KA20I file and select Copy Selected to Local Disk. Navigate to the folder you created in Step 16 and select it. Velocity will copy the Title Update to your PC.

Done — all files are ready

Once the transfer is complete, you have all the files needed to install Unleashed Recompiled. You can now reconnect your hard drive to the console and restore your Xbox Live profile from the USB storage device if desired.
