Fylepad’s multi-tab interface lets you work on multiple notes at the same time, with support for drag-and-drop reordering, color coding, and tab linking.

Working with tabs

Creating tabs

Create new tabs in multiple ways:
Click the + button in the tab bar to create a new tab
Each new tab starts with a blank note titled “Untitled”.

Switching between tabs

Navigate between tabs:
  • Click on any tab to switch to it
  • Keyboard navigation — Use keyboard shortcuts to cycle through tabs
  • Command palette — Search for tabs by name (Ctrl+K / Cmd+K)
The command palette shows all your tabs with their titles, making it easy to find the right note.

Closing tabs

Close tabs you no longer need:
  • Click the × button on any tab
  • Use the tab context menu (right-click)
  • Keyboard shortcuts for closing tabs
Closed tabs are not saved unless you’ve locked them or they contain content. The auto-save feature preserves your work.

Tab layouts

Fylepad supports two tab layout modes:
Tabs appear in a horizontal bar at the top of the window. This is the default layout, ideal for wide screens and quick tab switching.Perfect for:
  • Laptops and desktop monitors
  • Working with many tabs
  • Quick visual scanning
Switch between layouts by clicking the layout toggle button in the tab bar.

Tab persistence

Fylepad automatically saves your tab state:
  • Tab content — All text and formatting
  • Tab order — Your custom arrangement
  • Tab titles — Custom names you’ve assigned
  • Tab colors — Color coding
  • Tab locks — Locked/unlocked state
  • Active tab — Which tab was open when you closed
When you reopen Fylepad, all your tabs restore exactly as you left them.
Tab state is saved locally on your device. The desktop app uses the file system, while the web version uses browser localStorage.

Tab limits

Fylepad has no hard limit on the number of tabs you can create. However, performance may vary based on:
  • Device memory
  • Total content across all tabs
  • Number of diagrams, tables, and complex content
For best performance, close tabs you’re not actively using.
