General Questions

Typist is a comprehensive keyboard-driven UX mod for Balatro that adds keybindings for all gameplay actions. It enables you to play the entire game without using your mouse, making gameplay faster and more efficient for keyboard-focused players.
Yes! Typist is compatible with several popular mods including:
  • Steamodded - The popular mod loader (Typist uses the Lovely injector which Steamodded also depends on)
  • DebugPlus v1.4.x - Hold Ctrl as a leader for enhanced debug features
  • BalatroMultiplayer - Full support for multiplayer sessions with special keybinds for PvP blinds
  • Taikomochi - Enter key retries the last ante in zen mode runs
  • FlushHotkeys - Integrated for best hand selection (conflicts are automatically resolved)
See the Compatibility page for full details.
Typist supports three keyboard layouts out of the box:
  • QWERTY (default)
  • Dvorak
  • Workman
Positional keys (like asdf for toggling cards) are kept consistent across layouts, while mnemonic keys (like r for reroll) remain the same.
Yes! You can create a typist-overrides.lua file in your Balatro directory to customize any keybinding to your preference. See the Configuration guide for details.
No, but it’s recommended. Typist only requires the Lovely code injector. If you have Steamodded installed, you already have Lovely. If not, you just need to install Lovely separately (see Installation).

Gameplay Questions

Use the home row keys to toggle cards:
  • QWERTY: asdfghjkl for the first 9 cards
  • Dvorak: aoeuidhtns for the first 9 cards
  • Workman: asdhgjklf for the first 9 cards
Press the corresponding key once to select a card, press again to deselect it.
The cheat layer (accessed by holding p) provides quick hand selection shortcuts:
  • b - Select the best hand from available cards
  • f - Fish for the best flush in your hand
  • , - Select the leftmost 5 cards
  • . - Select the rightmost 5 cards
These features come from the integrated FlushHotkeys functionality.
  • Hold [ to access the joker layer for selecting/moving/selling jokers
  • Hold ' to access the consumables layer for selecting/using/selling consumables
  • Use the number row (1-9, 0) as a convenience layer for quick access to both jokers and consumables
The backslash key lets you “unacorn” a card - drag it out of its area. This is particularly useful for snatching a joker away before the Amber Acorn boss can shuffle it!
While in a round, use the bottom row keys:
  • c - Sort by suit
  • v - Sort by rank
  • b - Sort by enhancement and score (glass cards to the end, lucky and mult cards to the beginning)
Note: These keys have different functions in the shop!

Technical Questions

Typist currently supports:
  • Balatro 1.0.1n
  • Balatro 1.0.1o
The mod is actively maintained for compatibility with new versions.
The installation location varies by platform:
  • Windows: %AppData%/Balatro/Mods/balatro-typist-mod
  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Balatro/Mods/balatro-typist-mod
  • Linux (Steam/Proton): ~/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/2379780/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Balatro/Mods/balatro-typist-mod
Create a file called typist-layout in your Balatro save directory containing one of: qwerty, dvorak, or workman. The mod will read this file on startup.
Yes! Check the Keybindings Reference for a complete list of all available keybindings organized by context.
