What is Wordgrid?
Wordgrid is a crossword-style vocabulary game built around a 3×3 grid. Each row and each column carries a category label — for example, “Ends with ‘ed’” or “Contains ‘q’” — and every cell sits at the intersection of one row category and one column category. To fill a cell, you must guess a word that satisfies both categories simultaneously. Words are validated against a curated word list. A guess is only accepted if the word exists in the list and genuinely meets the row and column conditions for the cell you are targeting.Game modes
Wordgrid offers two modes, switchable from the sidebar at any time. Daily generates a fixed board seeded from the current date. Everyone who plays on the same day sees the same puzzle. A countdown timer in the sidebar shows how long remains until the next daily board becomes available. Progress is saved locally so you can return to an in-progress daily board. Infinite generates a random board on demand. You can reroll to get a new board at any time, and your progress on the current board is saved between sessions. The leaderboard is only available in Daily mode. Infinite mode boards do not have leaderboard entries.
Scoring and rarity
Each accepted word earns points based on a rarity score. The score is calculated from the letter frequencies of the English language: words that contain rare letters such as q, z, x, j, or k score significantly higher than words built from common letters. Longer words also earn a length bonus. Additionally, cells that have fewer valid candidate words in the word list apply a scarcity multiplier to your points. When you complete all nine cells, a flat 500-point completion bonus is added to your total. Your running score is displayed in the sidebar ascurrent / maximum (percentage).
Difficulty levels
Three difficulty levels control how the game handles incorrect guesses. You can change the difficulty at any time from the settings menu, though doing so resets the current board.| Level | Behavior on an invalid guess |
|---|---|
| Normal | The guess is rejected with no penalty. |
| Hard | The guess is rejected and 50 points are deducted from your score. |
| Expert | The cell is permanently eliminated — no further guesses are accepted for it and no points can be earned. |
Leaderboard and board analysis
After completing a Daily board you are offered the option to submit your score to the daily leaderboard. The leaderboard ranks up to the top ten scores for that day’s puzzle. Once the board is complete you can also open a board analysis view. This walks through each of the nine cells, comparing your answer and points against the highest-scoring word the game identified for that position, and finishes with an overall summary showing matched cells, eliminated cells, and points missed.Next steps
