This guide walks you through everything from opening the app for the first time to having a fully catalogued book sitting on a named bookshelf — all in about five minutes. NeverTooManyBooks is designed so that adding a book is as friction-free as possible: point your camera at a barcode, confirm the details the app fetches automatically, and tap Save. The steps below show exactly how to do that, plus how to explore the library view and begin organising your collection.
1

Open the App — Meet the Books on Bookshelf Screen

After launching NeverTooManyBooks for the first time, the startup activity initialises the database and then hands off to the Books on Bookshelf screen. This is the app’s home screen and the hub for everything you will do day-to-day.At the top you will see the current bookshelf name (defaulting to My Books). The main area lists your books grouped according to the active display style. Right now it will be empty — that is about to change.
2

Tap the + Button to Add a Book

Tap the floating action button (FAB) — the large + icon in the bottom-right corner of the screen. A menu appears offering several ways to add a book:
  • Scan Barcode — use the device camera to scan an ISBN barcode
  • Search by ISBN — type or paste an ISBN manually
  • Search by Text — search by title, author, or keywords
  • Add Manually — fill in all fields yourself without a web lookup
For most books you own physically, choose Scan Barcode or Search by ISBN.
Don’t have the physical book to hand? Choose Search by Text and type the title or author’s name. NeverTooManyBooks will query the enabled data sources and return a list of matching books you can select from.
3

Scan the Book's Barcode

Point your camera at the barcode on the back cover of the book. The integrated scanner recognises standard ISBN-10 and ISBN-13 barcodes (and ASINs for Amazon-only titles).Once the barcode is detected, the app immediately queries all of your enabled data sources in parallel — you will see a progress indicator as results come in. No extra tapping required.Batch scanning mode: if you are adding many books in one session, the scanner can stay open between scans. Each recognised barcode is queued and processed in the background so you can keep scanning without waiting. A Save button lets you commit queued books directly without opening the edit screen for each one.
4

Review the Fetched Metadata and Save

After the search completes, the Edit Book screen opens pre-filled with data gathered from your enabled sources. Review the fields — typically:
  • Title, subtitle, and language
  • Author(s) and their role (author, editor, illustrator, etc.)
  • Cover image (the app picks the best one found; you can swap it)
  • ISBN-10 and ISBN-13
  • Publisher and publication date
  • Series name and number
  • Genre and description
Make any corrections you like, then tap Save (the checkmark icon in the toolbar). Your book is now stored locally in the app’s database.
The set of data sources queried — and their priority order — is fully configurable. Go to Settings → Search → Websites to enable, disable, or re-order sources. Sites can also be configured individually (for example, choosing an Amazon regional store or enabling high-resolution covers from DNB).
5

Find Your Book in the Library

After saving, you return to the Books on Bookshelf screen where the new book appears in the list. Tap the book’s row to open the Book Details view, which shows all saved fields, the cover image, and quick-action buttons for marking the book as read, loaning it, or editing it.Swipe left or right on a book row (depending on your gesture settings) to reveal quick actions without opening the detail view.
6

Create a Bookshelf to Organise Your Collection

Bookshelves are named containers — think of them like physical shelves or reading lists. To create one:
  1. Open the navigation drawer by tapping the hamburger icon (☰) in the top-left corner.
  2. Tap Manage Bookshelves.
  3. Tap the + button, enter a name (e.g. Science Fiction, To Read, Lent Out), and tap OK.
You can then assign any book to one or more bookshelves from the Edit Book screen, or by long-pressing a book in the list.
7

Customise Your Library View

NeverTooManyBooks supports multiple display styles that control how books are grouped and sorted. To change the current style:
  1. On the Books on Bookshelf screen, tap the Style button (the panel-layout icon near the top-right, or accessible from the overflow menu).
  2. Choose a built-in style such as Author, Family name, Series, Genre, or Publication year.
  3. The list immediately regroups — collapsible headers appear for each group value.
You can also create custom styles with your own combination of grouping levels and sort fields from the Style editor.
