Metrolist can translate lyrics into any target language and romanize non-Latin scripts using an AI provider of your choice. All AI features are opt-in and require you to supply your own API key.
AI features are not free. You need an API key from your chosen provider. Most providers offer a free tier with limited monthly credits — check your provider’s pricing page before getting started.

Supported providers

Metrolist supports the following AI providers out of the box:

OpenRouter

A unified API gateway that routes requests to hundreds of models. The default provider. Includes access to Google Gemini, OpenAI GPT, DeepSeek, Meta Llama, xAI Grok, and more through a single API key.

OpenAI

Direct access to GPT models including gpt-4o-mini, gpt-4o, and gpt-4-turbo.

Google Gemini

Direct access to Gemini Flash and Gemini Flash Lite models via Google’s OpenAI-compatible endpoint.

Anthropic Claude

Direct access to Claude models including claude-opus-4-6, claude-sonnet-4-6, and claude-haiku-4-5.

Mistral AI

Direct access to Mistral Large, Medium, Small, and Tiny models. Added in v13.3.0.

Perplexity

Access to Perplexity Sonar models including sonar, sonar-pro, and sonar-reasoning.

xAI (Grok)

Direct access to Grok models including grok-4-1-fast and grok-vision-beta.

DeepL

A dedicated neural machine translation API. Does not use a chat model — no system prompt customization applies. Supports a formality setting (default / more formal / less formal).
You can also select Custom to point Metrolist at any OpenAI-compatible endpoint by entering a base URL manually.

Configuration

1

Open AI settings

Go to Settings → AI.
2

Select a provider

Tap AI provider and choose from the list. The base URL is set automatically for all built-in providers. If you select Custom, you must enter the base URL manually.
3

Enter your API key

Tap API key and paste your key. For DeepL, tap DeepL API key instead. The key is stored only on your device.
4

Choose a model

Tap Model and select from the preset list for your provider, or choose Custom to type in any model identifier your provider supports.
5

Set your target language

Tap Target language and select the language you want lyrics translated into.
Your API key is stored in the app’s local shared preferences on your device. It is never sent to any Metrolist server — it is only included in requests sent directly from your device to your chosen AI provider. Treat it like a password: do not share your backup file with others if it contains an API key.

Translation modes

For providers other than DeepL, you can choose how the AI approaches translation.

Literal

Translates the lyric text as written. Preserves the original meaning and phrasing as closely as possible. Best for understanding what a song says.

Transcribed

Adapts the translation to match the syllable count and flow of the original so it could be sung. Best for karaoke-style use.

Customizing the AI prompt

Metrolist sends a system prompt to the AI that instructs it how to translate. As of v13.4.0, you can replace this prompt with your own. Go to Settings → AI → System prompt and edit the text. If you want to revert to the built-in default, tap Reset to default in the dialog.
Custom prompts are useful if you want to enforce a specific tone, request phonetic transliterations alongside translations, or instruct the model to preserve certain words untranslated (such as proper nouns).

DeepL-specific settings

When DeepL is selected as the provider, the model selector and translation mode options are hidden. Instead, you can configure:
  • DeepL API key — your DeepL authentication key
  • Formality — choose between Default, More formal, or Less formal to control the register of the translated output

Using translation in the lyrics view

Once AI is configured, open the lyrics panel while a song is playing and tap the translate icon. Metrolist sends the current lyrics to your configured provider and displays the translation inline. For full usage instructions — including romanization and switching between the original and translated text — see the lyrics translation guide.
