Minimal Tray Tasker includes a built-in notification system to help you stay on track with your tasks throughout the day. This guide explains how notifications work and how to manage them.

Hourly Reminders

The core of the notification system is hourly reminders that prompt you to check on your task progress.

How It Works

  • Timing: Notifications appear at the top of every hour (1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc.)
  • Precision: Triggers at exactly 00 minutes and 00 seconds of each hour
  • Message: Displays “Did you finish all of your tasks today?”
  • Frequency: Every 60 minutes, all day long (while the setting is enabled)
The notification system runs automatically in the background. It calculates the time until the next full hour and schedules the notification accordingly.

Notification Content

Title: “Reminder” Body: “Did you finish all of your tasks today?” This simple, friendly reminder prompts you to:
  • Check your task list
  • Update your progress
  • Stay mindful of your daily goals
  • Take action on pending tasks
Notifications appear regardless of whether you have pending tasks or not. The system doesn’t analyze your task list; it simply reminds you to check in on a regular schedule.

When Notifications Appear

Understanding the timing helps you make the most of the reminder system.

First Notification

When you start Minimal Tray Tasker:
  1. The notification service initializes
  2. It calculates the next full hour
  3. The first notification appears at that time (e.g., if you start at 2:30 PM, first notification at 3:00 PM)

Subsequent Notifications

After the first notification:
  • Notifications continue every hour on the hour
  • The pattern continues as long as:
    • The application is running
    • The reminders setting is enabled

Example Timeline

TimeEvent
9:47 AMYou start Minimal Tray Tasker
10:00 AMFirst reminder appears
11:00 AMSecond reminder
12:00 PMThird reminder
1:00 PMFourth reminder
Continues every hour
If hourly reminders feel too frequent, you can disable them in the settings and rely on checking your system tray icon manually.

Managing Notifications

You have full control over whether reminders are enabled or disabled.

Enabling Reminders

To turn on hourly notifications:
  1. Open Minimal Tray Tasker from your system tray
  2. Click on the Settings or preferences option
  3. Find the “Reminders” toggle
  4. Enable the toggle (turn it on)
  5. Reminders will start at the next full hour

Disabling Reminders

To turn off hourly notifications:
  1. Open Minimal Tray Tasker from your system tray
  2. Access the Settings
  3. Find the “Reminders” toggle
  4. Disable the toggle (turn it off)
  5. No more notifications will appear (even at the next hour)
When you disable reminders, the notification service continues to run but checks the setting each hour. If the setting is disabled, no notification is shown.

Default Setting

By default, reminders are enabled when you first install Minimal Tray Tasker. This helps you get into the habit of checking your tasks regularly. If you prefer a quieter experience, you can disable them at any time.

Notification Behavior

System Integration

Minimal Tray Tasker uses your operating system’s native notification system:
  • Windows: Notifications appear in the Action Center
  • macOS: Notifications appear in Notification Center
  • Linux: Notifications use the system’s notification daemon

Interaction

  • Click: Clicking the notification opens Minimal Tray Tasker (behavior depends on OS)
  • Dismiss: Dismissing the notification has no effect on the app
  • Do Not Disturb: System-level DND settings may suppress notifications
If you’re not seeing notifications, check your operating system’s notification permissions for Minimal Tray Tasker. Some systems require you to grant permission for applications to send notifications.

Use Cases

When Reminders Are Helpful

Building New Habits

Regular reminders help reinforce new daily tasks and habits until they become automatic.

Busy Schedules

When you’re focused on work, hourly check-ins help you remember personal goals and tasks.

Time Awareness

Notifications serve as a gentle time marker, helping you stay aware of the hours passing.

Accountability

Regular prompts create a sense of accountability for completing your daily tasks.

When to Disable Reminders

Notification Fatigue

If you find hourly notifications distracting or overwhelming, turn them off.

Meeting-Heavy Days

During days with back-to-back meetings, notifications can be disruptive.

Deep Focus Work

When you need uninterrupted concentration, disable reminders temporarily.

Established Habits

Once tasks are routine, you may not need hourly prompts anymore.

Troubleshooting

Check the following:
  1. Verify that reminders are enabled in Minimal Tray Tasker settings
  2. Check your operating system’s notification permissions
  3. Ensure Do Not Disturb or Focus modes aren’t blocking notifications
  4. Confirm the app is running (check system tray)
  5. Wait until the next full hour to see if a notification appears
Notifications should only appear on the hour (X:00). If they’re appearing at other times:
  1. Check your system clock is correct
  2. Verify your timezone settings
  3. Restart Minimal Tray Tasker to reinitialize the notification service
The frequency is fixed at one per hour. You cannot change the interval. Your options are:
  • Keep reminders enabled (hourly)
  • Disable reminders completely (none)
If you need different frequencies, use your OS’s Do Not Disturb schedule as needed.
Currently, the notification message is fixed and cannot be customized. It will always say “Did you finish all of your tasks today?”
No, notifications are generic reminders. They don’t include specific task information. You need to open the app to see your task list.
Missed notifications don’t stack up. If you dismiss or miss a notification, the next one will simply appear at the following hour. There’s no catch-up mechanism.

Best Practices

1

Start with reminders enabled

Give the hourly reminder system a try for at least a week to see if it helps your productivity.
2

Respond to notifications

When a reminder appears, take 30 seconds to open the app and update your progress. Make it a mini-habit.
3

Adjust based on your rhythm

If hourly feels like too much, disable them. If you find you need the nudges, keep them on.
4

Combine with system settings

Use your OS’s Do Not Disturb during focus time, and let notifications through during normal hours.
