Minimal Tray Tasker provides three essential settings to customize your experience. This guide explains each setting and how to configure them.

Available Settings

Minimal Tray Tasker includes three settings:
  1. Autostart - Launch the application automatically when your computer starts
  2. Reminders - Enable or disable hourly notification reminders
  3. RAM Saver - Optimize memory usage for better system performance
All settings can be toggled on or off independently based on your preferences.
Settings are stored locally on your computer and persist between application restarts. Your preferences are remembered.

Autostart

Control whether Minimal Tray Tasker launches automatically when you start your computer.

What It Does

When enabled:
  • Minimal Tray Tasker starts automatically when you log into your computer
  • The application launches minimized to your system tray
  • Your tasks are immediately available without manual launching
  • Daily task resets are processed automatically at midnight (even if you don’t manually open the app)
When disabled:
  • You need to manually launch Minimal Tray Tasker each time
  • The app won’t be available until you start it
  • You may miss midnight resets for daily tasks if the app isn’t running

Default Setting

Enabled by default - Most users benefit from having their task tracker ready at all times.

When to Enable

Daily Task Users

If you use daily tasks that reset at midnight, autostart ensures the reset happens automatically.

Habit Tracking

For tracking habits and routines, having the app always available in your tray is convenient.

Set and Forget

When you want task tracking to be a seamless part of your workflow without thinking about it.

Reminder Users

If you rely on hourly reminders, autostart ensures you get them throughout the day.

When to Disable

Minimal Startup

If you prefer a clean startup with minimal applications launching automatically.

Occasional Use

When you only use task tracking sporadically and don’t need it running all the time.

Resource Management

If you want to reduce the number of background applications (though combined with RAM saver, impact is minimal).

Manual Control

When you prefer to consciously decide when to start tracking tasks.
Even with autostart disabled, you can still manually launch Minimal Tray Tasker anytime. It will appear in your system tray and function normally.

Reminders

Control whether you receive hourly notification reminders to check your tasks.

What It Does

When enabled:
  • You receive a notification every hour on the hour (1:00, 2:00, 3:00, etc.)
  • Notification says: “Did you finish all of your tasks today?”
  • Provides regular prompts to check and update your task progress
  • Helps maintain awareness of your tasks throughout the day
When disabled:
  • No notifications are sent
  • You need to remember to check your tasks manually
  • Quieter, less intrusive experience
  • The system tray icon is your only reminder

Default Setting

Enabled by default - Helps new users build the habit of checking tasks regularly.

How It Works

The notification system:
  1. Runs continuously in the background
  2. Calculates the next full hour
  3. Waits until that time
  4. Checks if reminders are enabled
  5. If enabled, shows the notification
  6. Repeats for the next hour
Even when disabled, the notification service still runs but simply doesn’t display notifications. You can enable or disable this setting at any time without restarting the app.

Best For

Enable reminders when:
  • Building new habits and need regular prompts
  • Working long hours and want check-in reminders
  • Easily distracted and need periodic nudges
  • Starting with task tracking and establishing routines
Disable reminders when:
  • You find notifications distracting or overwhelming
  • Already have a strong habit of checking tasks
  • Working in environments where notifications are disruptive
  • Prefer a quieter, self-directed approach
For more details about how notifications work, see the Notifications page.

RAM Saver

Optimize memory usage to reduce the application’s impact on system resources.

What It Does

When enabled:
  • Minimal Tray Tasker uses various techniques to minimize RAM consumption
  • The application has a smaller memory footprint
  • Better performance on systems with limited memory
  • More resources available for other applications
When disabled:
  • Standard memory usage patterns
  • Potentially faster UI responsiveness in some scenarios
  • No memory optimization applied

Default Setting

Not enabled by default - The application is already lightweight, so most users don’t need additional optimization.
Minimal Tray Tasker is built with Tauri, which already creates very lightweight applications compared to traditional frameworks. RAM saver provides additional optimization for users who need it.

When to Enable

Limited RAM

If your computer has 4GB RAM or less, enabling RAM saver can help.

Many Apps Running

When you typically run many applications simultaneously and need to conserve memory.

Older Hardware

On older computers where every megabyte of RAM counts.

Performance Issues

If you notice system slowdowns and want to reduce app memory usage.

When to Disable

Modern Hardware

Systems with 8GB+ RAM typically don’t need RAM saving optimizations.

Maximum Responsiveness

If you want the absolute fastest UI response time.

Troubleshooting

If you experience any issues, disabling RAM saver can help isolate the problem.

Default Experience

When you want the standard, tested application behavior.
Try enabling RAM saver if you notice high memory usage. You can always disable it if you don’t notice a benefit or experience any issues.

Accessing Settings

To configure your settings:
1

Open Minimal Tray Tasker

Click the Minimal Tray Tasker icon in your system tray to open the application window.
2

Navigate to Settings

Look for a Settings button, gear icon, or preferences menu in the application interface.
3

Toggle settings

Each setting has a toggle switch. Click to enable (on) or disable (off).
4

Changes apply immediately

Settings take effect as soon as you toggle them. No need to save or restart.

Settings Persistence

All settings are saved automatically:
  • Changes persist between application restarts
  • Settings are stored in local configuration files
  • Your preferences are preserved even after updates
  • No cloud sync - settings are specific to each computer
If you reinstall the application or clear application data, settings will return to their defaults. Make note of your preferred configuration.

Frequently Asked Questions

No, all settings take effect immediately without requiring a restart. The application dynamically responds to setting changes.
Settings are stored locally on your computer in configuration files managed by the application. The exact location depends on your operating system but is in standard application data directories.
Currently, there is no built-in export feature. Settings are simple toggles that are easy to reconfigure if needed.
No, updating to a new version of Minimal Tray Tasker preserves your existing settings. Your configuration is maintained across updates.
Yes, settings are stored locally on each computer. You can configure each installation independently based on that machine’s needs.
Autostart functionality depends on operating system permissions. Check that Minimal Tray Tasker has the necessary permissions to register as a startup application. Some Linux distributions may require additional configuration.

Troubleshooting

Autostart Not Working

  1. Verify the setting is enabled in Minimal Tray Tasker
  2. Check your operating system’s startup application list
  3. Ensure you have the necessary permissions
  4. Try disabling and re-enabling the setting
  5. Check for antivirus or security software blocking autostart

Reminders Not Appearing

  1. Confirm reminders are enabled in settings
  2. Check operating system notification permissions
  3. Verify the app is running (check system tray)
  4. See the Notifications page for detailed troubleshooting

RAM Saver Impact Unclear

  1. Use your operating system’s task manager to monitor memory usage
  2. Compare usage with RAM saver enabled vs disabled
  3. On systems with abundant RAM, the difference may be minimal
  4. The benefit is most noticeable on resource-constrained systems
If you experience any issues with settings, try resetting to defaults by disabling all settings, restarting the app, then re-enabling your preferred configuration.
