retroview targets broad compatibility — it is a lightweight GLSL shader pack that runs on virtually any hardware released since 2010. Only two things are strictly required: Minecraft itself and the Iris Shaders mod. Everything else is optional but recommended for a better experience.

Required mods

Iris Shaders

Required. retroview uses Iris’s GLSL shader pipeline to apply its retro post-processing effects. Latest tested version: 1.8.11+1.21.5-fabric.

Fabric Loader

Required (as a dependency of Iris). Minimum version: 0.16.14. Iris is a Fabric mod and will not run without it.
OptiFine is not compatible with retroview. retroview only works with Iris. Do not install both simultaneously.

Sodium

Strongly recommended. Sodium pairs with Iris to deliver significantly better frame rates. Latest tested version: mc1.21.5-0.6.12-fabric. Install via Modrinth or CurseForge alongside Iris.

Minecraft version support

retroview has been tested across a wide range of releases:
RangeStatus
1.16.5 – 26.2.1 (latest snapshot)Tested and supported
All shaders use #version 330 compatibility, the GLSL 3.30 compatibility profile, which is broadly supported across all Minecraft versions in this range.

Hardware requirements

Any GPU with OpenGL 3.3+ support. This covers virtually all discrete and integrated graphics hardware released from around 2010 onward, including:
  • Intel HD Graphics (Gen 7+)
  • AMD Radeon Vega integrated graphics
  • Apple Silicon via Iris on macOS
  • Any modern NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel discrete GPU
No additional RAM is required beyond Minecraft’s own needs. retroview adds no extra memory overhead — it operates entirely on the GPU.
retroview runs smoothly on integrated graphics. If you can run Minecraft, you can run retroview.

Mod loader support

Iris is a Fabric mod, so Fabric is the only officially supported loader. NeoForge and Quilt may work via Sinytra Connector but are untested and not supported. Forge is not supported.
