Once retroview is installed and enabled, the fastest way to get a great retro look is to adjust two options first: retroPixelScale for the overall pixel grid size, and retroLevels for color depth. The defaults are tuned to be visually clear without being extreme — from there you can push further in either direction. All changes apply immediately with no restart needed.
If retroview isn’t installed yet, complete the installation steps first, then return here.

Quick setup

1

Enable the shader

Launch Minecraft and open Options → Video Settings → Shader Packs. Select retroview-1.1.1.zip and click Apply. The retro effects activate immediately.
2

Open shader options

In the Shader Packs screen, click Shader Options (or press the options button next to retroview in the list). This opens Iris’s built-in panel where all retroview settings live.
3

Adjust retroPixelScale first

retroPixelScale controls the size of the pixel grid. The default is 5.0 — try lowering it to 3.0 for a noticeably stronger pixelation effect, or raise it toward 8.0 for a subtler look.
Start at retroPixelScale = 3.0 for a strong, unmistakable retro effect. It’s the single biggest visual change you can make.
4

Adjust retroLevels for color depth

retroLevels sets how many color levels are available after dithering. The default is 31.0, which gives a modern-ish palette. Lower it to reduce colors and push further into retro territory.
Set retroLevels = 8.0 for extreme color reduction that mimics early 8-bit or 16-bit palette constraints.
5

Fine-tune the remaining effects

With pixelation and color depth set, adjust the remaining options to taste:
  • Raise retroScanStrength above 0.08 to make scanlines more visible
  • Raise retroVignetteStrength above 0.25 for a darker CRT-edge effect
  • Lower retroDitherStrength below 1.0 to soften the Bayer dither pattern

Default option values

These are the defaults shipped with retroview, sourced directly from composite.fsh:
OptionDefaultWhat to change it for
retroPixelScale5.0Lower for more pixelation, raise for subtler effect
retroLevels31.0Lower for fewer colors and a more retro palette
retroScanStrength0.08Raise to make CRT scanlines more visible
retroVignetteStrength0.25Raise to darken screen edges more
retroDitherStrength1.0Lower to soften dithering, raise to intensify it
All shader option changes take effect immediately. You do not need to restart Minecraft or reload the shader to see changes.
