Installing MoltenVR takes just a few minutes. Download the app, run the setup wizard to configure your Wine bottle and VR runtime, connect your headset, and you are ready to stream PCVR games from your Apple Silicon Mac.
MoltenVR is not yet notarized by Apple. On your first launch, macOS will block the app with a security dialog. Instead of double-clicking, right-click MoltenVR.app → Open to bypass the Gatekeeper check. You only need to do this once.
1

Download MoltenVR

Go to the MoltenVR GitHub Releases page and download the latest MoltenVR-Preview-vX.Y.Z.zip archive.
2

Install the App

Unzip the downloaded archive and drag MoltenVR.app to your /Applications folder.
3

First Launch

In Finder, navigate to /Applications, then right-click MoltenVR.app → Open. Confirm the prompt to launch the app for the first time. The setup wizard will open automatically.
4

System Check

The wizard first validates your environment — it confirms you are running Apple Silicon, macOS 14 Sonoma or later, and that any required tools are present. Resolve any flagged issues before continuing.
5

Set Up Your Wine Bottle

The wizard walks you through configuring a Wine bottle so Windows VR games can run on your Mac.
The managed WhiskyWine/GPTK bottle is the recommended choice. The wizard creates and configures it for you automatically — no manual Wine setup required. Select this option unless you have a specific reason to use an existing bottle.
  1. Create a managed bottle — one click creates a WhiskyWine/GPTK bottle pre-configured for VR.
Alternatively, connect an existing bottle from Whisky (frankea fork), CrossOver, or Wineskin.
  2. Install the graphics layer (DXMT) — one click installs DXMT, which translates D3D11 calls to Metal for Apple Silicon.
  3. Install the VR runtime (OpenXR) — one click installs the MoltenVR OpenXR runtime inside the bottle, enabling VR support for games.
6

Install the ALVR Client on Your Headset

MoltenVR streams to any headset running the ALVR client. Install ALVR v20.14.0 on your headset from the official release:
MoltenVR requires ALVR client v20.14.0. Download the APK from github.com/alvr-org/ALVR/releases/tag/v20.14.0 and sideload it onto your headset.
7

Grant macOS Permissions

On first use of desktop view and game audio, macOS will prompt for Screen Recording and Microphone permissions. Grant both when asked. If you dismiss the prompts, you can enable them manually in System Settings → Privacy & Security.
8

Start Your First Stream

  1. In MoltenVR, click Start Stream.
  2. Put your headset on and open the ALVR app.
  3. Navigate to the Games screen in MoltenVR and launch a game.
You should see the game rendering in your headset with full 6DoF head tracking, controller input, haptics, and audio.
