MoltenVR lets you play PCVR games on an Apple Silicon Mac by streaming them to a VR headset over USB or Wi-Fi. These are the questions that come up most often — from Wine bottle setup and licensing to headset compatibility and Minecraft VR.
No. MoltenVR has its own built-in Wine bottle manager (WhiskyWine/GPTK under the hood) and that’s the recommended setup — the setup wizard creates and configures the bottle for you automatically. If you already have games installed in a Whisky, CrossOver, or Wineskin bottle, MoltenVR can use that existing bottle instead.
No — SteamVR doesn’t run on macOS. MoltenVR is its own OpenXR runtime and streaming stack, reusing ALVR’s battle-tested transport layer and headset client.
Open a GitHub issue at github.com/112cxyz/MoltenVR-Preview/issues and include the name of the game. Unsupported games usually just need one additional OpenXR extension advertised by the runtime, which is a small fix.
When the preview period expires, the app asks for a license key. Enter a key from Patreon (coming soon) to unlock the latest version on that Mac. Alternatively, download a fresh preview release from GitHub Releases, which resets the 7-day window.
Yes — via Vivecraft, fully native (no Wine required). This makes MoltenVR the first way to play Minecraft in VR on a Mac since SteamVR for Mac was discontinued in 2020.
Yes. MoltenVR supports existing Whisky, CrossOver, and Wineskin bottles in addition to its own managed bottle.
Any headset that runs the ALVR client v20.14.0 should work. MoltenVR has been tested on the Meta Quest 3. Download the correct ALVR client release from github.com/alvr-org/ALVR/releases/tag/v20.14.0 and sideload it onto your headset.
Yes — install android-platform-tools via Homebrew and enable Developer Mode on your Quest headset:
brew install android-platform-tools
