Once you are signed in, you can establish your first VPN connection in seconds.

Connect with one tap

The fastest way to connect is to let Proton VPN select the optimal server for you.
1

Open Proton VPN

Launch the app. You will land on the home screen showing your current connection state.
2

Tap the Connect button

Tap the large Connect button in the center of the home screen. Proton VPN automatically selects the fastest available server based on your location.
3

Grant VPN permission

The first time you connect, Android will ask for permission to set up a VPN connection. Tap OK to allow it.
4

Wait for the connection

The app will show a Connecting state briefly, then transition to Connected once the tunnel is established.
The fastest server selection prioritizes low latency. If you want to connect to a specific country or city, see Choosing a country or server below.

Choosing a country or server

You can browse and connect to servers by country or choose a specific server.
1

Open the server list

From the home screen, tap Countries or swipe up to open the full server list.
2

Select a country

Tap a country to expand it and see the available server groups or individual servers.
3

Connect

Tap a country name to connect to the fastest server in that country, or tap a specific server to connect to it directly.
Free plan accounts have access to servers in a limited set of countries. Servers marked with a lock icon require a paid plan. See account setup for plan details.

Understanding connection states

The home screen reflects your current connection status at all times.
StateWhat it means
DisconnectedNo VPN tunnel is active. Your traffic is going through your regular internet connection.
ConnectingProton VPN is negotiating the VPN tunnel. This usually takes a few seconds.
ConnectedThe VPN tunnel is active. Your traffic is encrypted and routed through the selected server.
When connected, the home screen shows the server you are connected to, your new IP address, and the VPN protocol in use.

Disconnect

To end your VPN session:
1

Tap Disconnect

On the home screen, tap the Disconnect button. The tunnel closes immediately and your traffic returns to your regular connection.
Disconnecting from the VPN does not sign you out. Your account remains active and you can reconnect at any time.

Quick Settings tile

Proton VPN provides a Quick Settings tile so you can connect and disconnect without opening the app.
1

Open Quick Settings

Swipe down from the top of your screen to open the notification shade, then swipe down again to reveal the full Quick Settings panel.
2

Add the Proton VPN tile

Tap the edit (pencil) icon to enter tile editing mode. Find the Proton VPN tile and drag it into your active tiles.
3

Use the tile

Tap the Proton VPN tile to toggle the VPN connection on or off. Long-pressing the tile opens the Proton VPN app directly.
The Quick Settings tile connects to the same server or location you last used, making it convenient for your usual connection.

Home screen widget

Proton VPN also offers a home screen widget for one-tap access from your launcher.
1

Long-press your home screen

On your Android home screen, long-press an empty area to enter widget mode.
2

Find the Proton VPN widget

Tap Widgets and scroll until you find the Proton VPN widget. Multiple sizes are available.
3

Place the widget

Drag the widget to your preferred location on the home screen.
4

Connect from the widget

Tap the widget to connect or disconnect. The widget displays your current connection state and updates in real time.
Widget availability may vary depending on your Android launcher. If you do not see the widget option, check that your launcher supports widgets.
