Flex time is an optional block of dead air that Tunarr inserts between episodes to separate them in the schedule. On its own, a flex block is simply empty time — but when you assign a filler list to the channel, Tunarr automatically fills those blocks by pulling short clips (commercials, bumpers, trailers, or any other content you choose) from the list at stream time. This is the primary mechanism for simulating traditional television, complete with commercial breaks between programs.
Flex time and filler lists are two separate concepts that work together. Flex time is the gap in the schedule; a filler list is the pool of content that fills those gaps. A channel can have flex time without a filler list (in which case the channel fallback image is displayed), but a filler list assigned to a channel has no effect unless flex time has actually been scheduled.

How Flex Time Is Created

Flex time does not appear automatically — it is created by scheduling tools. The most common approach is to use Time Slots with the Pad Times option enabled. Pad Times ensures each time slot starts and ends at a fixed clock time, inserting a flex block to fill any gap left after a program ends before the next slot begins. Other tools that can create flex time include the Random Slots editor and manual lineup adjustments.

Channel Fallback

When flex time is scheduled but no filler list is assigned to the channel, Tunarr displays the Channel Fallback — a static placeholder image. By default this is Tunarr’s own fallback graphic, but you can replace it with your own image by clicking the upload button on the Flex tab. This is useful for channels where you want the feel of a broadcast schedule without needing a full filler library.

Assigning a Filler List to a Channel

Before you can assign a filler list, you must first create one in the Library section.
1

Create a filler list in the Library

Navigate to Library → EDIT FILLERS → NEW in the Tunarr sidebar. Give the list a name, click ADD MEDIA, and add clips from your media libraries. See the Filler Lists page for a full walkthrough.
2

Open the channel's Flex tab

Navigate to your channel, then click the Flex tab.
3

Select the filler list

From the filler list picker, select the list you created. A channel can reference any number of filler lists. When multiple lists are assigned, Tunarr draws from all of them when selecting clips to fill a flex block.
4

Save and test

Save the channel settings. The next time a flex block is hit during playback, Tunarr will automatically pull a clip from the assigned filler list to fill the gap.

How Filler Is Selected at Stream Time

When playback reaches a flex block, Tunarr calculates the exact duration of the gap and selects one or more clips from the assigned filler list(s) to fill it as completely as possible. Clips are chosen to avoid overrunning the end of the flex window, ensuring the next scheduled program starts at its correct time.
For the most authentic commercial-break experience, populate your filler lists with clips that are 15–90 seconds long. Very long filler clips can leave significant dead time at the end of a flex block if no shorter clip fits the remaining gap.
