Downloading a song

You can download any song directly from the app. Downloads are stored locally on your device using ExoPlayer’s DownloadManager, with up to three songs downloading in parallel.
1

Find the song

Search for a song, or browse your library, an album, or a playlist.
2

Open the song menu

Long-press the song row, or tap the three-dot menu icon next to it.
3

Tap Download

Select Download from the context menu. The download starts immediately in the background.
4

Monitor progress

A download progress indicator appears next to the song while it is in progress. The indicator disappears and the song is marked as downloaded when complete.
Downloads are stored locally and tied to this device. They are not synced across devices or to any cloud storage. If you uninstall Metrolist or clear the app’s storage, all downloaded files are removed.

Accessing downloaded songs

Downloaded songs appear in Library → Downloads. This is a persistent playlist that automatically includes every song that has been fully downloaded. You can play, shuffle, or add any downloaded song to a queue from this screen — no internet connection required.

Automatic song cache

Metrolist automatically caches every song you play using ExoPlayer’s SimpleCache (the player cache). Starting with v13.4.0, cached songs are treated as offline songs — they appear in Library → Downloads alongside explicitly downloaded tracks and play back without a network connection.
The difference between a download and a cached song is permanence. Downloads are kept indefinitely until you remove them. Cached songs may be evicted when the cache reaches its size limit, freeing up space for newer content.

Storage management

Go to Settings → Storage to manage how much space Metrolist uses.

Cache size limit

Set the maximum size of the automatic song cache. When the limit is reached, older cached songs are evicted to make room.

Clear cache

Remove all automatically cached songs immediately. Explicitly downloaded songs are not affected.

Clear downloads

Remove all downloaded songs from local storage.

View storage usage

See how much storage the player cache and download cache each occupy.

Download quality

Downloads use the same Audio quality setting as streaming. Go to Settings → Player → Audio quality to choose:
  • Auto — selects the best format available (default)
  • High — always downloads the highest available bitrate
  • Low — downloads a smaller, lower-bitrate file to save storage
See Audio settings for more detail on audio format options.

Auto-download on like

Metrolist can automatically download a song whenever you like it. Enable this under Settings → Player & Audio → Auto-download on like.

How offline mode works

When your device has no internet connection, Metrolist automatically plays songs from the download cache or the player cache instead of streaming. No manual mode switch is required — if a local copy exists, it is used.
Songs that have not been downloaded or recently cached require an internet connection to play. Attempting to play them while offline will result in a playback error.
Songs that cannot be resolved because of a missing internet connection will show an error in the queue. If Auto-skip on error is enabled (under Settings → Player & Audio → Auto-skip on error), Metrolist automatically skips them and continues with the next available track.
