How skills work
Skills Plugin replaces traditional XP levelling with a use-based progression system inspired by Ultima Online. There are no XP points to grind — you improve a skill by performing the actions it covers.- 37 skills span combat, magic, crafting, gathering, thief, taming, and survival.
- Each skill runs from 0 to 100.
- Skills rise in increments of 0.1 per successful gain check.
- The gain check fires every time you perform a relevant action. The higher your current skill, the lower the chance to gain on any single action.
The 700-point skill cap
Your combined skill total can never exceed 700 points. Once you reach the cap, gaining in one skill automatically reduces whichever skill you have used least recently by the same 0.1 increment.700 points across 37 skills — with each skill capped at 100 — means you can max out 7 skills completely. Everything above that requires trade-offs. Specialise in a tight role or spread broadly across many skills; both are valid strategies.
Your first combat skill: Swordsmanship
Fight mobs
Attack monsters with the sword. Each attack attempt triggers a Swordsmanship gain check, whether or not the attack hits.
The Tactics skill affects how much damage your hits deal (acting as a damage multiplier from 0.1× to 1.0×). Train Tactics alongside your weapon skill to deal meaningful damage.
Checking your skills
Use/skills to display your full skill list at any time.
Checking your stats
Use/stats to see your derived statistics — STR, DEX, and INT — calculated automatically from your skills, plus your current HP and mana.
The skill lock system
Once your total approaches 700, you may want to prevent certain skills from being reduced automatically. Use the lock system to control which skills can go up, down, or are frozen entirely.| Mode | Icon | Behaviour |
|---|---|---|
| UP | ▲ | Skill can gain but will not be chosen for automatic reduction |
| DOWN | ▼ | Skill can be reduced automatically (default) |
| LOCKED | 🔒 | Skill is frozen — it neither gains nor decreases |
Your first spell
Casting spells requires three things: a spellbook, a scroll to learn the spell from, and the right reagents in your inventory.Get an empty spellbook from a librarian
Find a Librarian villager at level 3 (Journeyman). They sell empty spellbooks for 30–50 emeralds.
Admins can give a spellbook directly with
/skilladmin give <player> spellbook blank.Buy a scroll
Level 1 Librarians sell 1st-circle scrolls (Magic Arrow, Heal, Create Food, Night Sight) for 5–8 emeralds. Level 2 Librarians sell 1st- and 2nd-circle scrolls.
Learn the spell
Hold the scroll in your hand and right-click it. The spell is recorded into your spellbook and the scroll is consumed.
Collect the reagents
Each spell requires specific items in your inventory. For example, Heal (1st circle) requires a golden carrot.Keep reagents in your inventory, a shulker box, or a bundle — the plugin searches all of these automatically.
Hold your spellbook and cast
Hold the spellbook in your main hand or off-hand, then run:A casting bar appears. Stand still while it fills — moving more than 0.5 blocks interrupts the cast. When the bar completes, click a target to fire the spell.
You can also cast using UO-style Power Words instead of the spell name. For Heal, that is:
