Creating an exam on ExamPlatform is a structured, step-by-step process that keeps each concern separate: you configure the exam settings first, then choose the evaluation approach, then pick the exact questions students will see, and finally assign the students who are allowed to sit it. Only once all of those pieces are in place do you publish the exam and make it visible on students’ schedules.

Creating and publishing an exam

Create a draft

Go to Exam Management in the sidebar and click New Exam. Fill in the exam details form:
  • Exam title — the name students will see on their schedule.
  • Subject — the subject this exam covers; used to filter the question bank.
  • Start time and End time — the window during which students can enter the exam.
  • Duration (minutes) — how long each student has to complete the exam once they start. The server-controlled timer counts down from this value and cannot be paused.
  • Total questions — how many questions will be presented to each student.
  • Passing percentage (optional) — the minimum percentage score required to pass. Leave blank if you do not want a pass/fail threshold applied.
  • Negative marking — toggle on to deduct marks for wrong answers using the negative mark values defined per question in the bank.
  • Instructions (optional) — exam-specific guidance shown to students on the pre-exam instructions screen alongside the platform’s standard proctoring rules.
Click Create Exam (draft) to save. The exam is created with a Draft status and is not yet visible to students.

Configure the evaluation workflow

After the draft is created, configure how subjective answers will be handled. Three toggles are available:
  • Enable AI evaluation for subjective answers — when on, the AI engine analyses short answer, long answer, and image-upload responses and generates a first-pass grade suggestion for each.
  • Allow manual examiner review — when on, the examiner can open any subjective answer and override the AI suggestion with a final grade.
  • Route subjective responses to manual review after AI first-pass — when on, every subjective answer goes into the examiner grading queue after the AI has run, ensuring a human reviews every response before results are published.
Choose the combination that matches your assessment policy. For high-stakes exams, enabling all three provides the most rigorous oversight.

Select questions

Open the Choose questions from subject panel. The panel displays only active questions from the question bank that match the exam’s subject. Use the subject filter to narrow the list further if needed.Select individual questions by clicking their checkboxes, or click Select all to include every active question in the subject. Use Clear to deselect everything and start over. The note at the top of the panel confirms: Only selected questions will be considered when creating this exam. Once you are happy with your selection, confirm to attach the questions to the exam draft.

Assign students

Click the Assign action on the exam to open the Assign students dialog. Use the search box to find students by name, email address, or roll number. Select each student you want to grant access to this exam, then confirm the assignment. Only assigned students will be able to see and start the exam.

Publish the exam

When the draft is complete — questions selected, students assigned — click Publish. The exam status changes from Draft to Upcoming, and it appears on the schedules of all assigned students. From this point the platform handles the rest: the exam opens automatically at the configured start time, the server-controlled timer enforces the duration, and the exam auto-submits when a student’s time expires.

Exam statuses

Exams move through a defined lifecycle. Understanding each status helps you manage your exam calendar and respond correctly when something needs attention.
StatusMeaning
DraftThe exam has been created but not yet published. Students cannot see it. Questions and settings can still be freely edited.
UpcomingThe exam has been published and is scheduled for the future. Students can see it on their schedule but cannot start it yet.
ActiveThe exam window has opened — students can enter and begin. New students cannot be assigned once the exam is active.
LiveOne or more students are currently inside the exam. Live Monitoring shows their real-time status and AI risk signals.
CompletedThe exam window has closed and all sessions have ended (or been force-submitted). Results can now be graded and published.

Managing exams

The Exam Management table lists all your exams with the following columns: Exam (title and subject), Status, Start (date and time), Duration, and Questions (count). The action buttons on each row let you:
  • Assign — open the Assign students dialog to add or review assigned students.
  • Publish — move the exam from Draft to Upcoming.
  • Cancel — stop the exam immediately. Cancellation prevents students who have not yet started from entering, and ends any sessions currently in progress. Submitted answers are preserved.
During a live exam you can also use Force Submit in Live Monitoring to immediately end an individual student’s session — for example, if a student’s browser has become unresponsive or a serious integrity issue has been detected.
Once an exam is published, changing the question selection is restricted. Plan and confirm your question set carefully before clicking Publish. If you need to make significant changes after publishing, cancel the exam and create a new draft with the correct questions.
Cancel is permanent. Once an exam is cancelled, it cannot be reopened or re-published. Students who had already submitted their answers before cancellation will have their responses preserved, but results cannot be published for a cancelled exam. Use Cancel only when you are certain the exam should not proceed.
