The question bank is the central repository of every question available for use in your exams. Questions are organised by subject, type, and difficulty so you can quickly find the right mix when building an exam. Because questions live independently of any single exam, you can reuse them across multiple assessments, update them once and have the change reflected everywhere, and build up a rich library over time. Question types
ExamPlatform supports five question formats. Each type has its own authoring fields and a distinct grading path.MCQ (single correct)
MCQ (single correct)
The student selects exactly one option from a list. You define the question text, add up to as many options as needed, and mark exactly one as correct. Set the Marks awarded for a correct answer and, if you have enabled negative marking on the exam, the Negative marks deducted for a wrong choice. MCQ answers are scored automatically at submission using the answer key.
Multi-select
Multi-select
The student selects all options they believe are correct — more than one option can be right. You mark every correct option when authoring the question. Set Marks for a fully correct response and Negative marks if desired. Like MCQ, multi-select answers are auto-graded at submission.
Short answer
Short answer
The student types a brief text response. When authoring, set a Min word count and Max word count to guide the expected length. Provide a reference answer in the answer key field — this answer is used by the AI first-pass grading engine to suggest a score. Short answer responses are routed to the examiner for final grading.
Long answer
Long answer
The student writes an extended text response — suitable for essay questions, analytical responses, or detailed explanations. Set Min word count and Max word count to define the expected scope. Supply a model answer or marking criteria in the answer key field, which the AI uses for first-pass grading assistance. All long answer responses require examiner review.
Image upload
Image upload
The student photographs their handwritten answer and uploads the image. ExamPlatform’s OCR engine extracts the text from the image automatically, and the extracted text is displayed alongside the original image during examiner grading. The AI first-pass suggestion (where configured) is based on the OCR-extracted text. The examiner reviews both the image and the extracted text before assigning a final grade.
Creating a question
Open the question form
Navigate to Question Bank in the sidebar. Click the New Question button to open the question authoring form.
Set subject, type, and difficulty
Choose the Subject this question belongs to. Select a Question type — MCQ (single correct), Multi-select, Short answer, Long answer, or Image upload. Set the Difficulty level to Easy, Medium, or Hard to make it easier to balance your exams later.
Enter the question text
Type the full question in the Question text field. Write clearly and precisely — this is exactly what students will see during the exam.
Set marks and negative marks
Enter the Marks awarded for a correct or fully graded answer. If your exams use negative marking, enter the Negative marks to be deducted for an incorrect response. For subjective questions this field represents the maximum marks the examiner can award.
Add answer options (MCQ and multi-select only)
For MCQ and Multi-select questions, add each answer option using the option fields. Mark the correct option (MCQ) or all correct options (multi-select). Use the Remove button to delete an option you no longer need.
Set word count limits and reference answer (short and long answer only)
For Short answer and Long answer questions, set the Min word count and Max word count. Then enter a reference answer in the answer key field. This reference answer is used for AI-assisted first-pass grading — the examiner always has the final say on the awarded marks.
Add a topic tag
Enter a Topic tag (for example, Photosynthesis) to categorise the question within its subject. Topic tags help you search and filter the bank, and are especially useful when generating AI questions for a specific area of the syllabus.
Importing questions
If you already have questions in an external format, you can bring them into the bank in bulk using four import paths. Import CSV — Upload a CSV file that follows ExamPlatform’s defined column schema. This is the fastest way to migrate a large existing question set. Download an export of your current bank first to see the expected column structure. Import PDF — Upload a PDF document containing questions. ExamPlatform parses the document and attempts to extract each question, its options, and the correct answer. Review the extracted questions before saving to ensure accuracy. Import from Google Form — Paste the link to a Google Form that contains your questions. ExamPlatform ingests the form structure and maps each item to the appropriate question type. Useful if your team already authors questions in Google Forms. Import from link — Paste a direct URL to an externally hosted question set. ExamPlatform fetches and parses the resource, attempting to extract questions into the bank for your review. Generate questions with AI — Enter a Topic or describe the Learning objective in the text field (for example, “Cellular respiration in eukaryotes — focusing on the electron transport chain”), choose the Question type and Difficulty, set the Count of questions to generate, then click Generate Questions. The AI produces a batch of questions with answer options and a suggested answer key for you to review and save.Filtering and searching
Use the filter bar at the top of the question bank table to narrow down the list:- All subjects — filter to a single subject
- All types — filter by MCQ, Multi-select, Short answer, Long answer, or Image upload
- All difficulties — filter by Easy, Medium, or Hard
Only questions with an active status appear in the question-selection panel when you are building an exam. If a question you expect to see is missing from the exam creation panel, check that it has not been deactivated or deleted in the bank.
