Browser mode includes a visual customization system that goes well beyond a simple color toggle. You can choose between dark and light interface themes, and independently select one of seven background presets that change the overall atmosphere of the browser shell. Because the two choices are independent of each other, combining them gives you a wide range of distinct looks — from a clean, distraction-free workspace to a richly colored environment with deep ambient tones.

Dark and Light Themes

The theme setting controls the overall tone of the Browser mode interface — the toolbar, tab bar, panels, and any UI chrome that surrounds the content you are viewing.
  • Dark mode — applies a dark background to the browser shell with light text and accented controls. Well suited to low-light environments, extended sessions, or users who simply prefer a darker aesthetic across their tools.
  • Light mode — applies a light, open background to the browser shell with dark text. Better for brightly lit rooms or users who find lighter interfaces easier to scan quickly.
The theme setting is found inside the Browser mode settings area, accessible either through the toolbar menu or by navigating to cg://settings from the address bar. Changes apply immediately without requiring a reload.

Background Presets

Background presets affect the visual character of the browser environment itself — the color palette, gradient, and overall atmosphere behind and around the interface. There are seven presets to choose from:
  • Minimal — a clean, distraction-free background with no strong color statement. Minimal is designed to get out of the way entirely, keeping the focus on the content in the browser rather than the environment around it. It is the most neutral option and works well in any context.
  • Aurora — a cool, northern-lights-inspired gradient that moves through soft blues, teals, and greens. Aurora brings a sense of calm movement to the background without being distracting, making it a strong choice for long sessions where you want a subtle visual identity without fatigue.
  • Dusk — warm sunset tones that blend oranges, purples, and deep pinks. Dusk captures the transitional quality of late afternoon light and works particularly well in dark mode, where the warm gradient contrasts naturally with the dark interface chrome.
  • Ember — a deep red-orange palette inspired by firelight and glowing coals. Ember is the most intense of the warm presets, with rich saturation that gives the browser environment a striking, energetic feel. Pair it with dark mode for the strongest effect.
  • Ocean — a blue deep-water palette that ranges from mid-ocean teal to near-black deep-sea tones. Ocean is calming and cool-toned, making it a natural companion to dark mode for users who want a focused, immersive look without straying into warm colors.
  • Ash — muted grey and charcoal tones that sit between Minimal and the more expressive presets. Ash has a subdued, monochromatic quality that softens the browser shell without removing all visual texture, making it a good middle ground for users who want some character without strong color.
  • Rose — soft pink and blush tones with a gentle warmth. Rose is the lightest of the tinted presets and pairs equally well with dark and light themes, adding a delicate color accent that does not overwhelm the rest of the interface.

Combining Theme and Background

Dark and light modes combine independently with any background preset, which means you have fourteen distinct combinations available from just two controls. A few pairings that work especially well:
  • Dark + Ocean — a cohesive deep-blue environment that feels immersive and focused
  • Dark + Ember — high-contrast warmth that makes the interface feel vivid and bold
  • Light + Minimal — the cleanest possible workspace, fully distraction-free
  • Light + Rose — a soft, warm light environment that feels gentle on the eyes
  • Dark + Aurora — a cool, glowing look that is distinctive without being fatiguing
No combination is locked or unavailable — every theme pairs with every preset, and your choice is saved to your account so it persists across sessions when you are signed in.

Where to Change Themes

Both the theme and background preset controls are located in the Browser mode settings. You can reach them in two ways:
  1. From the toolbar — open the settings or preferences menu in the Browser mode toolbar and look for the Appearance or Theme section.
  2. From the address bar — type cg://settings and press enter to go directly to the settings page, then navigate to the Appearance section.
Changes take effect immediately, so you can preview presets in real time by switching between them before committing to a choice.
If you spend long sessions in Browser mode, the preset you choose has a real effect on eye comfort. Cool-toned, lower-saturation presets like Ocean or Ash in dark mode tend to reduce eye strain during extended browsing far more than high-saturation or bright-light combinations. Minimal in dark mode is another strong option for maximum fatigue reduction.
