Two tools sit at the heart of Desktop mode navigation: the dock and the launcher. The dock is the persistent strip along the bottom of the desktop that keeps your most-used apps one click away and shows you everything currently running. The launcher is the full, searchable catalogue of every app installed on your desktop — the place you go when you want something that is not already pinned. Together they cover both the familiar shortcut model and the broader discovery model, so you can move through your workspace quickly no matter how many apps you have installed.

The Dock

The dock lives at the bottom of the Desktop mode surface, styled in a way that will feel immediately familiar to anyone who has used macOS. It serves two purposes at once: acting as a permanent home for your pinned apps and as a live readout of everything currently open. Pinned Apps Pinned apps appear in the dock whether they are running or not. They represent your personal shortlist — the games, tools, and internet apps you reach for most often. Clicking a pinned app that is not running opens it; clicking one that is already open brings its window to the front. Running App Indicators Any app that is currently open shows a small indicator beneath its dock icon, even if the app is not pinned. This gives you a complete picture of your active session at a glance. Apps that are minimized rather than closed continue to show as running so you can restore them without hunting through the launcher. Pinning and Unpinning You can pin an app to the dock manually from within the launcher, from the app store after installing it, or by right-clicking a running app’s dock icon and selecting the pin option. Unpinning works the same way — right-click the pinned icon and choose to remove it. You can also ask the AI assistant to pin or unpin apps on your behalf using natural language, which is covered in more detail in the AI Integration guide.

The Launcher

The launcher is your full app catalogue in Desktop mode. Where the dock shows only what you have pinned plus what is currently running, the launcher shows everything — every app you have installed, regardless of whether it is pinned or active. Opening the Launcher The launcher can be opened from a dedicated button on the dock or by a keyboard shortcut from within Desktop mode. Once open, it presents a grid or list of all installed apps. Searching A search field at the top of the launcher lets you type any part of an app’s name to filter the list instantly. If you have a large collection of installed apps, this is the fastest way to reach something without scrolling. The search also surfaces platform content beyond just apps, so you can jump directly to settings, the app store, or other desktop tools from the same interface. Launcher vs. Dock The distinction between the two is intentional. The dock is curated — it shows only what you deliberately pin or what is actively running. The launcher is comprehensive — it always shows everything. Use the dock for your everyday go-to apps and the launcher when you want to reach something you have installed but do not access frequently enough to pin.

Managing Pinned Items

Your dock layout is entirely under your control, and there are several ways to adjust it. Pinning from the App Store When you install an app from the Desktop app store, you are given the option to pin it to the dock immediately. This is the most direct path to adding a brand-new app to your dock without extra steps. Pinning from the Launcher Inside the launcher, each app entry has an option to pin it to the dock. Right-click or long-press the app icon and select the pin action. The app will appear in the dock instantly. Using the AI to Manage Pins The Desktop AI assistant understands pinning requests in plain language. You can say something like “Pin Spotify to the dock” or “Remove Snake from the dock” and the assistant will make the change immediately without you needing to open the launcher or right-click anything. This is particularly handy on touch-based Chromebooks where right-click menus can be less convenient.
1

Open the Launcher

Click the launcher button on the dock, or use the keyboard shortcut from within Desktop mode to open the full app catalogue.
2

Find the App You Want to Pin

Scroll through the grid or type the app’s name into the search field at the top of the launcher to filter the list.
3

Select the Pin Option

Right-click (or long-press on touch) the app’s icon in the launcher and choose Pin to Dock from the context menu.
4

Confirm the App Appears in the Dock

The app icon will appear in the dock immediately, alongside your other pinned apps.
5

(Optional) Unpin

To remove the app from the dock later, right-click the dock icon and choose Unpin from Dock, or ask the AI assistant to unpin it.
You can manage your entire dock layout without ever opening the launcher. Just tell the Desktop AI assistant what you want: “Pin the App Store to my dock” or “Unpin Calculator.” The assistant handles the action immediately, making it especially useful when your hands are busy or you are on a touchscreen device.
Your dock layout — including which apps are pinned — is synced to your Crafted Gamz account whenever you are signed in. This means your dock will look exactly the same whether you are using Desktop mode on your school Chromebook, a library computer, or any other device where you sign in.
